Hi Jim and welcome from another Boomer. :D I didn't want this stuff either, I thought sure once we got rid of all those kids and Hubby retired, we would start enjoying life. It just didn't work out that way. But, we try to make the best of it, take joy where we can find it. The Diabetes thing isn't too bad though, you get used to taking care of it and you get to know all the wonderful people on this forum.

Hi Jim, welcome! I'm sure your diagnosis was a shock...I was floored when I got mine at 42! However, as time passes and you learn how to properly manage this new chapter in your life, it will become much easier to deal with.
I'd like to recommend a great book for newly diagnosed T2s (or any T2s that would like more information): "Type II Diabetes, The First Year," by Gretchen Becker. She is a T2 diabetic and this book outlines month by month through the first year. It explains diabetes, talks about ways to successfully control blood sugar, breaks down different treatment options....basically, it gave me the information I needed to be calm and realize "I can handle this."
Hope you have a monitor and are testing regularly. This is SO important. Testing 2 hrs after your first bite of food will allow you to see how different foods affect blood sugar and help you make smarter food choices. Avoiding carbs such as breads, rice, pasta and potatoes will also help keep blood sugars stable. Also, regular exercise will be very beneficial.
Hang in there. Hope you post often and ask lots of questions. You're not alone....and you will be fine.
Congrats by the way on your retirement....enjoy that extra time!

Hi Jim,
Welcome to this good place. I hear a lot of stories about people's retirement not being at all what they expected . . . but this takes the cake doesn't it?
Glad you joined and I hope you get the support you need.
