:) Hello to everyone here. I am glad I found this forum and I have been looking at some of the recipes and such from Stacey, thanks for all your tips. I am a type-2 diabetic. I found out a few months ago, and I haven't gotten it under control as of yet. (Like you say, we love to eat) but I do know how serious diabetes is and so I have to buckle down and get real and get some weight off as well. I am on Metforman, and I tried to use the byetta but then I have a problem with getting bound up and so I quit it, as I was getting sick from not being able to go, if you know what I am saying. So I am a little depressed, I lost 19 lbs and have put it all back on. :(. I cannot do much of any kind of excercises because of other health problems like in back surgeries, I won't go into that for now. I am middle aged, 54. I am glad to meet you all and Stacey, and hopfully I will get some encouragement and new ways of cooking in which I dearly love to cook and now since my last back surgery of having my main nerve tingled around my disc, I can still cook as long as I do it in my wheel chair. I am glad to be here and wish to testify that God raised me up to walk again, although I can only walk for 30 to 50 feet and then have to sit down its worse with standing in one position, in which I cannot do for any length of time, but I am certainly thankful I am not bedfast as I was for 8 months.

Sis Claire,
Welcome to the forum, I'm a newbie too, only diagnosed 8 weeks ago and know that at the start it can come as a real shock. This is a great forum, full of really wonderful and supportive people. I'm so glad that I found the forum, it has helped me immensely during the initial period of accepting I have diabetes. There is a book, which was recommended to me by a forum member, called "The First Year - Type 2 Diabetes" written by Gretchen Becker. I ordered it from Amazon because as far as I can tell it's not available in Europe. I have found it a very easy and informative read.
I was recommend testing, testing, testing as it was recommended to me and I found it really helpful to find out what foods work for me (don't spike my BG). Diabetes has probably saved my life as I have not been as healty in years, I was on track for a heart attack. It has meant making changes to my life style but I have become accustomed to them now.
In relation to cooking, I love to cook and I'm having fun adjusting my favourite dishes to be more BG friendly. I eat far more veg now. I find that stir frys work really well for me and really it's a matter if eating healthy.
Post and visit regularly, you will get great help and support here.
Welcome & good luck,

Hi SisClaire, welcome the the forums! It sounds like you've had a rough go of things. It is hard to get used to cooking lower carb versions of the foods we love, but it is so important to watch those carbs such as the white flour, potatoes, rice, pasta as they will generally cause blood sugar to rise.
I hope you are testing your blood sugars often, esp. 2 hrs after the first bite of your food...this is very important as it will show you how different foods affect your blood sugar and help you make smarter food choices.
I have heard that there are exercises that people can do sitting down, which would work out very well for someone who has to spend time in a wheelchair. This might help boost your metabolism and help your blood sugars.
Get the book Dave mentioned...its great information in an easy to read form. Post often, ask lots of questions. We're here to help.

Welcome to Diabetes Forums sisclaire. It sounds like you have a lot on your plate right now. I do hope you will find a form of exercise to keep your muscles in shape. My mother did not and is now suffering the consequences. She has no injury, but is in a wheelchair. She can't walk more than five steps without the wheelchair behind her. She can't get out of bed by herself or her chair (she has a lift chair). She just made the decision not to use her muscles and they talked back. I know you have a back problem. Please try and find a pool exercise group at the Y or local gym. This will not only help with your weight loss, but it will keep your muscles in shape.
