Hi all,

I haven't been officially diagnosed as having diabetes yet, but I seemed to be heading down that road.

Saw my Dr. in Nov. 2007 for a routine checkup, my blood work came back with a fasting BG of 108, cholesterol and triglycerides in the high range. Due to a couple of snow storms, I didn't get to see my Dr. again until Jan. 10, when he sent me for an A1C and gave me a BG meter to test myself with.

My A1C came back at 5.9.
Fasting BG has averaged at 110, ranging from 93 - 124.
2 hour post-prandial BG averages at 147, ranging from 122 - 222.

During the past week that I've been testing, I've followed a fairly strict diet, avoiding sugar and high-carb foods, so I don't know what my levels were at prior.

I've been reading this site and a slew of other information over the past week, as I believe that even if I don't get a definitive diagnosis at this time, I will get there eventually. My overall health is excellent and I'm physically very active.

As I've been telling my wife, I'm very fond of my limbs, vision and kidneys and don't want risk my relationship with them.

I look forward to interacting and learning from all of you.

Jim

Hi Jim, welcome. Good that you're being so proactive health-wise...it should serve you well. You can find lots of great information here that should be very helpful to you.

A good book you should find useful/informative is: "Type II Diabetes, The First Year," by Gretchen Becker. Even though you're not T2 yet, it will give you lots of good information.

Keep being active, watch those carbs and you should do well.

Glad you found the forums!

Hi Jim and welcome to Diabetes Forums. I think it is great that you are watching and taking control early. Keep pushing your doctor and get on a low carb diet. My gut (that I am quite fond of also) tells me you will do great.

Welcome

First, welcome aboard. Second, I absolutely, positively, 100% agree with Linda about that book. It's my Bible. Even though I may actually be a Type 1, I have found that book and these forums to be absolutely vital to accepting that I am diabetic, and to answering the questions I have needed answered quickly. You cannot go wrong by buying the book.

Just so you know, your numbers are not that high, so you could end up diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Just work hard to keep those numbers down.

Regards,

Welcome Jim, good to see you being proactive. The sooner you manage, the more your limbs will like you.

Linda,

Outside of my wife and my kids, my primary passion and hobby is woodworking. I build furniture and other household type stuff. My true talent in woodworking appears to be finding new and inovative ways of covering up mistakes, hence "butchering". However, I did grow up on a farm where we raised our own beef cattle and hogs, so when pressed, I'm a fair butcher in the traditional sense also.
