View Full Version : Psychological effects of a hypo?

When I feel low, my first instinct is to test to see how low I am, exactly. Might be a touch of morbid curiosity involved, but I've noticed several times now, including a 38 that woke me up last night, that my worst hypo symptoms come after I've read my meter. You think there's something about just seeing a low number on the screen that makes that sort of thing kick in? My two worst - the 38 last night and a 33 two weeks ago - I felt, obviously, before I tested, but last night for example, I didn't really break out in to a sweat until after I'd seen that I was at a 38. I felt sick and painfully lethargic already, but the sweat didn't happen until I saw the number. Same thing with the 33. I couldn't hardly stand up before the test, but after I saw the 33, I broke into a full-body sweat. I've had it happen with mild lows, too. I might just feel a little something that makes me want to test, I'll see a low 60 or a 50-something, and then I get the shakes for a few minutes.

Anyone else experience something like this?

I had this happen to me also.
I once had a bg so low that the actual number wouldn't register on my meter. I saw "LO GLUCOSE" show up on my meter. I rechecked just to make sure. Went and got my hypo treatment but didn't start to react (shakes, etc) until after I sat down.
It's scary, that's for sure.

I've noticed that too... perhaps that's what hypo unawareness means.. then when we tell our conscious mind..it kicks into gear and we ACTUALLY feel the symptoms...
