I don't know about you guys, but I LOVE bread! Being a diabetic means bread isn't really the best choice for me, so I'm always looking for tasty bread that's good for me. I finally found some at Meijer's, but I'll bet other stores carry it, too. The brand is Brownberry -- and it's called "Carb Counting Multi Grain". It has 9g carbs, but take away 3g fiber for 6g net carbs per slice. It has 60 calories per slice (with 15 from fat for 1.5g fat per slice), and that's pretty good, too!
Just spreading the word!

Helo girls, Susie & Elizabeth. I love bread too but I look at the high fiber breads these days so the local hot bread shop is for me so I would spend my BG's a bit expencive. LOL
There is nothing like a bread shop and freshly baked bread!!! YUM!!! :D :D :T

Elizabeth, how are you! :) I have used this bread, and love it. It is a bit pricey though, and I only buy it when I have coupons that are doubled.

Well Im sad, they dont have that bread anywhere near me. I sent them a note and maybe they might find a store in Omaha for it. We're a large City of about 3/4th of a million so theyd get the interest if they did start selling.
Peter, youre so right. Nothing like hot bread. oh my goodness

Bread is like my favorite thing in the whole world. :D I know we have that kind around here too. Aren't the slices really thin though?
I got a bread machine at Goodwill for $10 so I've been experimenting with making my own.
I get my bread at Meijer too. It is "Healthy Life" 100% Whole Wheat Whole Grain bread.
6 net carbs a slice, 40 cal a slice, contains Flaxseed with Omega 3.

I love homemade bread, but it absolutely kills me--even if I make it with 1/2 whole wheat flour and 1/2 unbleached bread flour. It's like the bread turns on the "Insulin Resistance" switch in my body or something. I could take an entire bottle of insulin and I'd STILL have a high blood sugar reading from bread. Okay, I exaggerate, but you get the idea.
I wonder if using some other kind of flour besides wheat flour would work better with our blood sugars (like rye, rice, or graham, or maybe the non-gluten bread mixes)?
Anyone out there tried this?

I'm two months into making my own bread, and I haven't made a bad or unfriendly loaf yet. I control all the ingredients. I especially like that I know how much salt goes in. The flour I primarily use is Robinhood Multigrain Product Details - Robin Hood (http://robinhood.ca/product.details.asp?pid=26&prodcid=9) but I'm going to start checking out the healthfood sections. The problem I'm finding is this stuff in the specialty areas doesn't always have food labels.

No, Dar, actually they're the same size as regular bread! Hope you can find it!
Penny, I'm well, thanks! And I hope you are, too!

Love the Brownberry Carb Control! I still don't eat bread often, but I can even have a slice for breakfast with some peanut butter, or a ham, egg, and cheese sandwich.

The problem with most non-wheat flours is that they don't contain the proteins necessary to develop gluten in the finished bread. Gluten is what makes breads and pastas have a chewy/stretchy texture and "mouth feel" to them. That is why bread and pasta must be kneaded, that works the proteins out and develops the gluten. It is also the reason that many baked good recipies say to mix only until things come together or specify a certain amout of mixing. If you overdo it the gluten will form and whatever you're making will lost the soft, light texture you're trying to get.
You can certainly make servicible bread or pasta without it (try some of the gluten free options in the health food section of your grocery store) but it is very difficult, if not impossible, to get that wonderful texture that a really good bread has.

If i'm really craving bread, i'll have a slice of the Nature's Own Double Fiber bread...13 carbs/slice, 5 fiber/slice = 8 total carbs/slice. Its got the "mouth texture" of bread that so many diet breads just can't seem to get right. They also have burger and hot dog double fiber buns as well.
