Hello,
I'm 49 years young, diagnosed in December 2006. Right now I'm uncontrolled with an A1C of 10.2. (I'm not 100 per cent sure of what that number represents) I have my first endicronologist ( I believe that's the spelling) on Tuesday. I appreciate the chance to be in this forum so I can speak to people that know how frustrating diabetes can be.

Welcome Geo.

Endos are usually great, but some are kind of anal. 10.2 is not good, but you'll get under the 6.5 target in no time. Keep returning here. It got me down that far and further.

Now to the game ... I'm an ex-pat cheesehead ;)

HI Geo & Welcome!

What is A1C?

Your A1C test measures your average blood sugar levels over a three-month period by taking a sample of hemoglobin A1C molecules—a specific component of your red blood cells.

Some blood sugar (or glucose) naturally attaches itself to these A1C molecules as they move through your bloodstream. When this happens, the molecule is considered "glycated." The more sugar in your blood, the higher the percentage of glycated A1C molecules you'll have.1

Once a cell has been glycated, it stays that way. And since each A1C molecule has a lifespan of about four months, your A1C sample will include cells that are a few days, a few weeks and a few months old. That's how the test result covers a span of about three months.

Welcome geomeister!
Does that nickname stand for anything to do with geocacheing? Used to have a friend that LOVED that stuff. Met him as a counselor at a 4H camp. I did model rockets and he did the geocacheing.
In any case hope we can help.
Mike

Welcome geomeister ! 38 year type 1 diabetes vet here. Sure it's frustrating, but hey, I could be worse (I always think that when I ride my 1200cc BMW motorcycle in the alps and see a guy in a wheelchair on the side of the road....).

you'll get that dreaded A1C down, no problem. Mine was at 10.2 earlier this year (wrong doctor), have a new endo now, and a insulin pump since december. last time they checked I was at 7.2. See, notta prob ! :D

enjoy your stay at DF, there is sure some great folks here !
