Hi all. I've just found this site while searching the net for recipes for my recently diagnosed 2-year old son. He loves waffles and I want him to still get all the stuff he loves albeit tweaked for health :) I'm looking forward to learning from all of you and maybe having a few laughs along the way. Thanks for putting this out there...r

welcome! this is a great place.

i am assuming your son has Type 1 diabetes and is using injected insulin?

if so, i will not comment on the food aspect. we need input from other insulin users to help you there.

Welcome to the site.

Waffles are wonderful ... and full of carbs. You will need to help him learn to count the carbs of everything he eats (home school math lesson!) and adjust insulin for that. Sugar-free syrups are everywhere now as are lower carb recipes for the batter. I'm sure someone will post one for you.

If you are not on insulin, just having smaller portions should help.

Hi, and welcome. So sorry to hear about your little boy.

I've heard from a lot of parents that real maple syrup does not seem to spike their children's sugars as much as the fake stuff. With an appropriate insulin dose my son can still eat a reasonable serving and usually be in range 3-4 hours later. With a busy toddler, take him to the park after and he'll probably work it off pretty fast! You might have more trouble with it for lunch if he goes down for a nap after. I find it helps to have a little pile of syrup for the child to dip the waffle/pancake in rather than pour it over the top -- easier to measure and they tend to use less when it doesn't have a chance to soak in. You can buy low-carb syrup but some parents are not keen on giving very young children artificial sugar substitutes.

That said, some people's children eat waffles or pancakes with just fruit spread or cinnamon.

Good luck to you and your son!

Yes, he is Type 1 and on a mix of NovoRapid and NPH. I'm thankful for the strength and resilience of little ones as he's taking these changes all very well. He has two older brothers who are super supportive and love helping me count his carbs and come up with delicious foods for him. His oldest brother is obsessed with food labels and we are, in fact, homeschooling and he's done a project on that already. So he's a big help (or annoying, depending on just when he's telling me what he knows or thinks I should do :) ) It has been one week since his diagnosis so we're still fumbling but doing OK, all things considered. We're big on natural foods but I have made a few 'convenient' choices for the short term, until this is whole process is a little more embedded in our lives. This morning I ended up making French toast with stevia instead of the honey I usually use and it was really good- even the brothers liked it.

OK, have I blabbed enough? I think so and now its time to clean up and play. Thanks again for the welcomes and I'll be back to read more soon.

Welcome.

I hate mixes if that's what he's on. And I hate NPH

Waffles are challenging, but when I eat them I do so with real maple syrup and I eat two big ones. I do that about twice a year ;) The whole key is to shoot up early, I do as much as 45 minutes for these, and if you pump, superbolus.

If you have decent insurance, see about getting him a pump. Controlling BGs while young is uber important for long term health and there's no better way. All the excuses your likely to receive are carp.

We're looking at a pump for down the road but the docs want to see that we have a clue what we're doing first. No medical insurance (self employed folks) but we'll make it work.

Why don't you like NPH? I'm super new at all this and need all the pros and cons from folks who have used them all.

Lovely!
How are you finding healthcare up there? Do you have to go to Nanaimo for an endo or even come down to Vic?

So many British Columbians! I never would've guessed.

Soso, Willow and I were Med-Evaced to Children's in Vancouver because there wasn't an oncall pediatrician when I took him in (sent to emerg by a doc at a walk-in on a Sunday afternoon) and there wasn't space in Nanaimo. I got the name of a pediatrician in Campbell River who has Type 1 and is on a pump and is well-respected by the endos at Children's so I'll get a referral from my GP to see him. And a doc from Lion's Gate in Vancouver does Diabetes Clinics in Campbell River as well so we get to stay close to home. We have one follow-up in Vancouver then we're here. We've had excellent care so far but its only been 8 days.
