Hello everyone...
My name is Oliver. I was diagnosed with Type 2 a few weeks ago... actually on my birthday (Happy b-day to me, right?). Well after a week or so in the hospital, I realize I have to try and deal with this thing, and I happened upon this forum looking for some help.
Hope that's what I find.
Nice to meet you guys.

Hello Oliver! I was diagnosed with T1 in 1945 less than a week after my birthday. I was born in Roanoke, VA. Old timers like me show that you can live a very long time with diabetes (62 years for me) and still be healthy. I hope you will be as lucky as I have been. I worked very hard to have the good health I have now. Good luck to you!

Thanks, Richard! I plan on do the very same thing. I'm working out and stuff now... the plan is to really get a hold of this thing. I appreciate the encouragement!

Welcome Oliver! Sounds like you're up to the task! You'll do fine...its scary to get that diagnosis, but as you'll see if you stick around the forum, many here are doing just fine living with diabetes.
What meds are you currently taking for your diabetes?
I hope you have a monitor and are testing...OFTEN! Its the best way to get good control. Testing 2 hrs after your first bite of your meals will give you an idea of how different foods affect your blood sugar. When first diagnosed, I kept a food journal, listing anything I ate and the corresponding blood sugars. In a short time, I had a good menu of things that had little or no affect on my blood sugars. You can make much smarter food choices this way.
A great book for new T2s (or anyone wanting to learn the basics about T2 diabetes): "Type 2 Diabetes, The First Year," by Gretchen Becker...I encourage you to read it.
If you are able to exercise, this is also very important.
Look around the forums, ask lots of questions...you're not alone, and we are here to help. Again, Welcome!

Hello and welcome to DF!!! I used to live in VA. Some time in the Hampton Roads-Norfolk-VA Beach area, and some time in Lynchburg.
