Welcome Daniel,
Yes - do please tell us a little about your self - you are Type 1 - how long now? What do you take for insulin? How are you A1Cs ? What has your control been like for you? What do you find works for you or does not work.
Welcome to DF!

Welcome aboard. I have only been here about a month, myself, however during that time I have learned a lot from these nice people. I am also new to being a Type 1, having only been officially diagnosed as Type 1 just a few days ago. We can learn together. :)

Yes, there was. Parts of it were filmed here... scenes that had the city hall in it... or the Welcome to Elizabethtown sign. Funny thing is... I haven't seen it!

I was actually getting on here tonite to post a new thread somewhere. I need encouragement... I think. I really suck at this diabetic thing. If you read my profile, you'll see I've never had any 'crashes'. Nothing major really.
Back in March 07, still 18, I noticed I was getting up 3-6 times EVERY night to use the bathroom. Then it dawned on me that it wasn't me needing to pee, but that I was thirsty. Everytime I'd get up, I'd pee then get a glass of water which then caused me to get back up to pee again... while up, I'd think "Man, I'm thirsty" which kept the up-down cycle going all night.
At one point I was so irritated with my thirst that I sat at the sink, refilled my glass ~6 times, thought I was going to puke but I was STILL thirsty!
After my mom griped and griped, I went to my family dr. They laughed when I asked to get some bloodwork done. Nevertheless, they did the bloodwork, called me in the next day, sugar was in the 690's. They sent me away with Rx for: Synthroid, Metformin, glucometer and strips; a referal for an endo, dieting instructions with 15lbs of literature, then a pat on the back with a "Good luck. You'll be fine."
Endochronologist tells me to stop the Metformin, and that I am type 1. I get a Lantus Opticlick. I get a referal for a dietician, more literature, a few DVDs, and instructions on dieting, carb-counting, and told to check sugars 4xs a day and call them in weekly.
It was all great for about 2 weeks.
Now I rarely (~twice a week) check my sugars; usually only when I don't feel so good. I take my Lantus 80% of the time. At first I cut out every source of sugar as I could. Now I'll eat something sweet daily.
Because you guys don't know me from Adam, I feel like I can say this... before my daughter was born last summer, I didn't value my life... at all. Now that she is here, I still don't think I value my life but I value the time I spend with her, the thought of raising her, teaching her. That being said, I think I am needing a kick in the ***. I know the risks of not controlling diabetes. I'm not so sure I care enough though.
I don't know what I'm looking for in writing all of this. Feel free to encourage, laugh, question or whatever else. I won't take it personal. Thanks
Daniel

Hello Daniel and welcome to the forum. I understand how you feel. I'm glad you found this place - you will find lots of great support here.
I'm not a type 1 so I can't offer too much advice except that you have something to stay healthy for - your daughter.
Don't forget that it isn't just sugar intake but anything that will become sugar in your bloodstream - primarily carbohydrates.

Daniel,
I'm sending you big hugs of encouragement. I think a LOT of us who became Type 1s in our late teens had a very hard time of caring and accepting our new life-long burden. I've never been an adult without diabetes. I feel it's pretty dangerous to be changed so much during the late teen years. Those hormones, rebellion, etc. about killed me. It's very likely those diagnosed as smaller children do better because that's all they've ever known.
It seems a lot of Type 2s, or late onset Type 1s or 1.5s, diagnosed in mid-adulthood, cannot/have not accepted the change in their life. It's rough; secretly, I just think . . . no big deal, geez . . . I've had this my whole adult life. Could it be the Type 1s from a very young age (18 months - 7 yrs or so) be looking at you and I, thinking . . . geez -- get used to it!? I've had it my whole life . . things could be a lot worse.
I am very glad you came here & it CAN change your life. I want you to care about yourself first. I promise you, like any habit, you can get used to testing often and doing the right thing for yourself. Congratulations on having a beautiful child who gives you a little (big) reason to live on!
Many of us here have done harm to ourselves by not doing better . . . if anyone seriously bashed you, I'd be totally amazed -- not going to happen!

Welcome Dan, glad you found the forums. As you can see already, lots of great people here.
You hang in there...we all struggle at times with diabetes, but each day is the chance to turn it all around.

God forbid Dan that your daughter could develop Type 1 in her future. Try to be the best role model that you can be ~ for her.

Thank you guys for all the encouragement. I'm going to my endo Monday (4th). I am going to get some levels recorded between now and then. I still will get grief for upping my Lantus over the past few months w/o telling them. Last they knew, I was taking 10u in the AM. I've upped that to 18, as I saw neccesary. Is there anything specific I need to ask them?

Ever considered going on an insulin pump?
I thought about it, didn't look too muck into it. My endo warned me that insurance usually wont cover it unless I'm 'shooting up' (what my family calls it) at least 4 times a day.
What do you guys think?
