Been lurking a week or two. DDay was 1/9/08 for type 2. reading all of your informative posts. I'm 42, 220lbs 6'4"
married, three kids. My glucose reading were 375 - 400 after fasting for 12 hours, now the are a spikey 125 - 200. metformin 2x a day, lisinopril 1x a day. I also have NASH, diagnosed with it in the mid 90's, had high liver counts since I was in the Marine Corps in the early 80's. No one else in my family has Diabetes. My boss at work has Diabetes, so I'm convinced i caught it from him. At least I tell him that a couple times a week. I had all the classic symptoms before I was diagnosed, I chalked it all up the stress of moving, working too much, and that great diet I wasnt on. Lost 20 lbs on it. Must have been the late night infomercials. I have the worlds greatest wife, she went to the doctor with me, asked all the right questions, got the right info. all I heard was something about sticking pins in my fingers 4 times a day.
her new favorite word is "Nope", can I have.... Nope.
she helped me pick out the meter, got it set up via insurance, I hate talking to them. But I am convinced that Hersheys bar is talking to me. We have a stare down every night.
Anyway, thought I would break the ice. Me, t2 and my spotty liver say Howdy!

Welcome to this wonderful forum! It is excellent to have a spouse help be the watch dog while everything becomes routine and settles into a pattern.
As far as the candy goes, I love chocolate too and am seriously allergic to the comercial "Sugar Free" candy.
I make easy Sugar Free Coconut bark. Only draw back is coconut oil melts @ 76 degees so you gotta eat it pretty quick.
Original Recipe
4T coconut oil (melt in micro)
1T cocoa powder (unsweetened)
1 pkt Splenda
add nuts if you want.
Stir splenda into cocoa. Add oil and stir.
Stir well and freeze to set.
Another bark recipe.
4T coconut oil (warm in micro)
1T cocoa powder (unsweetened)
3 pkt Splenda
2T heavy whipping cream, warmed
Stir Splenda into cocoa powder.
Add oil and stir well
Add warm cream and stir very quickly Freeze.

Welcome to the forums. What blood tests have they done on you? Specifically, have they done an anti-body test yet? If not, insist on it. I only mention that because of your height and weight. It's possible, you may not be a Type 2, but that can only be confirmed by the anti-body and C-petide tests.

I'm not sure what all tests they ran, they drew 5 vials of blood, came back type 2, cholesteral 172 and liver enzymes high. I will ask at my next appointment

Welcome Lizard! Sounds like you've got the right attitude and will manage your diabetes well.
I'd encourage you to test, test, test. If you test 2 hrs before your first bite of food, you'll see how different foods affect your blood sugar and be able to make smarter food choices. Watch your carbs, esp white bread, rice, potatotes and pasta. If you don't exercise, now's a good time to start.
A great book for new T2s "Type 2 Diabetes, The First Year," by Gretchen Becker...a must read, full of practical information. The author herself is a diabetic. I found this very useful to me when first diagnosed.
Look around, ask lots of questions, learn all you can about this new part of your life. Sounds like you have a great wife on your side as well.
BTW, it can take the metformin 3 weeks to take effect, so you may not see a big improvement in the first few days.
As for your chocolate cravings....I can relate! Right now, you've got to learn the healthy way to eat with your diabetes, but as your numbers normalize, you can certainly have the occasional treat. I keep a bag of Dove Dark Chocolates in the freezer, and when the chocolate urge hits, i'll have 1-2....takes frozen chocolate awhile to melt and you feel you've actually had more than you did. You could do the same thing with mini hershey bars...freeze them and have them IN MODERATION;)!

And another "welcome to the club"!
Your comment about that hershey bar talking to you struck a chord. My fiance (not diabetic) claims food talks to her all the time. She will look up from a book or TV program and ask: "Did you hear those cookies?" Or, "There's pasta in the pantry calling me." Just got to where I can safely ignore this.
I'll let her know she's not alone.

I also think food calls to us more when we think we can't have it.....instead of focusing on what you can't have, find lots of flavorful things you can eat safely and a lot of those cravings will go away...or at least diminish. I didn't think i'd ever be able to live w/o french fries....or Krispy Kreme donuts...but you'd be surprised how after several months of NOT having these things, you don't think of them that often...and you really enjoy the occasional treats. I truly enjoy what I eat now rather than just mindlessly eating as I did before.
