View Full Version : Moderate Ketones & I'm upset

Pumpers -- Please give me some encouragement. I finally pulled my canula out after a day of high numbers that didn't make sense, and the thing was bent. I had put it in at 10:00 a.m. this morning. I just got my second reading of over 350 today. Thankfully I took an injection the first time (but didn't test for ketones). I've been in such good control (2 digits most of the time) since I began pumping, 350 feels awful. Now at 9:30 p.m. I figured it out.

I'm stupid I guess. . . I posted earlier about going up to 325 post prandial after bolusing and eating oatmeal. Why didn't I pull out the canula then??? Stupid.

I want to cry and scream and wonder why I've been so excited about getting back to pumping. I'm even getting an upgraded pump Monday. And . . . the Quicksets did expire over a year ago (and Medtronics warned me). Plastic does deteriorate. New supplies should be here any day and I'll throw those old ones away. Then the new pump will be here Monday.

I took extra insulin for the ketones, and put another Quickset (6 mm, 23 inch) in and should be fine . . . . unless this one is bent too and how would I know NOW? I can't know until I check the bg again in a little while. At least I won't wait for hours to pull the thing out again. I have been trying so hard to be better & instead I end up temporarily poisoned by ketones.

Tell me the obvious or anything!! I already screamed at my husband and I refuse to scream at the animals!! I guess I have mostly answered my own questions, but . . . . ok thanks for letting me SCREAM!!

love,
jan!

Hi Jan B, I can't really help you for the pump issue and the canula . But if you don't want to go after the animals you could let it out on me . It does 'nt matter ,I can take it . I hope everything is OK now .But you can get upset once but not to long ,not good for us .Stress .Bye Ricky:D

You are kind Ricky,

I wouldn't DARE hurt my sweet Beau bear! He's my Springer Spaniel! Just seeing your Beau91 makes me think of my sweet pup! Most of my problems will be fixed with a bit more experience!

I don't stay upset long because I know it doesn't help much. Thank you!

Jan, I have had the same kind of day. I know all these highs this afternoon and evening cant be from that one cupcake I told you I ate. I changed out my set tonight too. The other one looked ok, so I checked the reservior and I could smell insulin, so I changed all of that out too. It is now coming down, but what a stressful day.

I had my car brake down today and being stranded and all the stress probably caused some of the highs that I had.

JanB,

I know what you mean about wanting to scream. I just went through a number of 6mm 23 inch quicksets that put me into a tail spin with levels. I had keytones and really high numbers until I got it back under control. Drink plenty of water as a first line of quick adjustment and defense along with appropriate bolusing. You can become dehydrated and have difficulty dropping the bg levels and become sick. Hydrate well and watch the numbers. Bump up yoru testing as you see fit.

I wish you well, I know how you feel. Been there a few times recently with equipment problems.

Been there. Know how you feel. I have had that happen plenty over my 6 years of pumping. I had a lot of problems with the quicksets and was unable to use em. You did what was needed to fix it, dont beat yourself up, it happens to all.

I've decided that's one thing I like about the Sure-T sets: the canulas can't get bent. Anway, I hope you start feeling better now.

I know exactly how you feel. It has happened to me more then once. (Fortunately not many times.) When it first happened I didn't think it was the canula, and I did ---you know the rest of the story. Now, whenever I have any doubt as to why I am high or my pump starts to beep due to non delivery, I immediately change the Quick-Set. I will not trade my pump in, but it can be a pain in the butt when things go wrong. Go talk talk to your animals or your husband, which ever you prefer. :D

The only difference with me is that I tend to over-bolus and really cause problems :(

Try some silhouttes. I've never had a bent one, only bad ones for whatever reason.

You guys all make me feel much better. I was at 53 at 4am, so I got the bg back down ok. I will try different infusion sets for sure. I learned a valuable lesson -- when the bg shoots up for no apparent reason, change sets immediately just to be safe. I can't believe how much better I feel (under breath . . . me -- stupid dummy). I'm glad I had those Ketostix.

Have a great day,

I now know why mine was running so high. I woke up at 2:30 am coughing and running a fever, so I think I have a cold. My numbers have came down some and now running just a little high, so lots of fluid and some soup and more sleep.

X and I are of the same mind on this one. I've kinked a lot of 90-degree sets, but never an angled one.

Hang in there, Jan! Hopefully, your new supply order will make a difference, and congrats on the new pump!
