View Full Version : First throw up

Yesterday, amidst all the snow and trouble getting home from work, I was sick as a dog. And before I even made it into the house from the driveway, BANG :puke: Yup, first vommit since Dx, so a year and a half at least.

That is scary as heck I tell ya. I just went to bed and didn't get out of bed for nearly 17 hours, no word of a lie. I couldn't stand being hooked up to the pump (and was scared to death of going low without being able to put any sugar in me without throwing it back up), so I went MDI. I'm still not feeling well, stomach upset and all, so I'm still MDIing it because I just can't deal with being hooked up to anything when I feel this bad. I'm just freaked out about going low without being able to fix it since I can't eat. Dropped 4 pounds too.

MDI isn't bad, really . . . you probably don't want/need any advice, so I'll just wish you well . . . fast! Hey, Injecto, you got a chance to use that little throw-up guy!! I know about the fear of going low . . . still when you are sick, insulin requirements usually go way up even without food.

Years ago, I was too sick to eat...some kind of flu sort of thing. I ended up sipping on sugar water...as needed. I still took my long acting, but cut back a little. Your basal may stay the same, or go up or down when sick.

Gatorade is good if your electrolytes are out of sort...but watch glucose levels...it's all sugar and water.

Hope you are feeling better soon...

Sorry to hear that.. You have a Glucagon shot laying around dont ya? When I got sick on new years my fear was going low, but it didnt dawn on me that I have Glucagon, so I kept my BG high on purpose, I couldnt eat for a day and a half. I ended up going to the hospital because I hurt my ribs ( from throwing up ), but once they saw the high BG's they flipped and thought it was DKA... Rookie mistake? Stupid on my part..

Just take care of yourself, keep you BG's under control, if you go low dont panic, you dont need the extra stress.. Drink water slowly but often, if you cant keep water down, get into the ER. I dont worry if I cant eat, but if I cant rehydrate, then I get scared.. Hope ya start feeling better soon :D

Fun isn't it? I've been there a few times. I'd have gone to ER once but I was too sick to move :)

In theory you know you should be fine with just basaling. In fact you'd probably need to up the basal to keep from going high. But if your not confident in your basals, then mdi is probably just as good. Did you have Lantus available?

Hope you're feeling better.

I remember doing that only a few weeks after starting insulin and being scared out of my wits about going low. The doc at the time told me to get some regular sprite or ginger ale and keep it on hand...a few sips will generally stay down and the sugar it them work fast. I hope your feeling better soon!

When I had my first bout of flu with D I was so nervous and unexperienced that I didn't take my insulin in fear of going low. I was so WRONG!! I wound up in DKA and now know no matter how sick I get I still must take my insulin. Usually now if I'm sick no matter how much insulin I take it isn't going low that is the problem it's trying to get my bg down.

Get better soon!

Hey Injecto. I don't have any suggestions too add. Gingerale and Gatorade are good to use. Do be careful that you're not taking too little insulin.....I'm one of those who has ended up with DKA from taking too little insulin during the flu.

Take care and get better soon. This too shall pass.

My numbers usually go higher when sick. Don't forget about the temp basal feature on the pump also, it works both ways. Hope you feel better soon.

I didn't give up on insulin, just went MDI (so I used a minimal amount of Levemir for my basals) just because I didn't want the feeling of being hooked up while running back and forth to the bathroom, if you catch my meaning. I was so tired and worn out that even my skin hurt so I really didn't want the pump around me at all. I checked my BGs regularly and I didn't go up past 6.0 at all, probably because I haven't eaten. Actually, I did have some supper (beans and buns, MMm Mmmm), and managed to go up to 9.3 but I had taken a bolus.

Been feeling better tonight, thanks for the well wishes and pointers. I'm going to go out and get gatorade (my wife went and got some koolaid, and my mother drove by with some flat Sprite). Otherwise I was just drinking rice water. Still feeling a bit tired but I'm hoping to be back at it for Tomorrow night (Super Bowl). :)

Hey Injecto, It's good to see that you're well, Can that be what you eaten that made you throw up??

I have been sick a few times since being diagnosed and its so horrible when you have to eat but I try and drink sugar drinks and I try and not eat because it makes me sick even more. I go high when I am sick but I remember last year when my sugars were really high and I was sick and I think that was caused because of my blood being high

I can't even tell you how many times Eri's been sick since dx'd...but her docs won't allow her to have gatorade, but they allow propel(same company, though)...
She usually ends up going "HI" and if the insulin works immediately, we can keep it under control...otherwise, that lovely insulin resistance keeps her bgl's up there until a while later and then she drops.

Hope you feel better!!!

Oh yes, this is so much fun, I have been running a low grade fever off and on since Friday, coughing and generally feeling blah. I thought I was better yesterday and we went and saw out new great nephew, he is a week old. I was not coughing or anything yesrterday, so I hope no one over there catches this crud.

I'm glad to hear you're back among the living. I personally HATE being that far out of it. Take good care of yourself Injecto. Be nice to your tummy.

Yeah, I'm doing a bit better (I was actually feeling better yesterday compared to today). I was surprised to see that I dropped 5 pounds this weekend.
