Will run this by one more time and then give up. Slight bleeding in eye (1st time)--not bad enough for surgery, could stop on its own Dr. said. Then nurse said no sit-ups, running, or weights. Is this true? Has anyone ever been given directions on what you can or can't do with eye problems? The opthalmologist didn't say anything, just get my sugars down--which I wish I could!!

Again, will quit asking. Just thought I would try one more time. Don't know where to go to ask.

I believe this is often advised. It doesn't mean that you have to stop permanently, but first it has to be made sure that no more bleeders are going to pop.

Obviously, if blood pressure goes up, the more likely a vessel will pop. High intensity exercise will elevate the blood pressure while it's taking place and that's why you were advised to avoid those items.

The nurses advice is not something that is "true or false", it is a recommendation made out of caution and with your best interests in mind. It isn't possible for anyone to know exactly how much it would take to cause you additional problems. The things you have been advised against may cause further problem, or they may not. This advise is an educated guess and typical advice for this situation. I think in this case I would heed the advice. If you wonder what your ophthalmologist or doctor would say about it then why not ask them?

Hi Barbara,

Yes, when I was going through all of my eye stuff, I was often advised to not bend over, pick up heavy things or otherwise get my blood pressure up. It was to give the broken vessels a chance to mend themselves and was only temporary.

Yes, do a temporary shutdown while bleeding/healing.

It used to be standard to recommend these things to us risky candidates, but now they say go ahead and do what you do. Basically if you are going to bleed, becoming inactive won't help anyway. You're still going to bleed. But while bleeding, don't help it along. Try to let it heal on its own.
