Thanks to this forum I had a few questions going in today. I was happily suprised when my endo beat me to the answers. My NP, who I usually see there, was out today. I'm glad I got to speak to the actual endo.
She beat me to my first question by asking "Why does Michelle (NP) only have you on Lantus?!" I said I had no idea, and was going to ask about this. She gave me a NovoLog FlexPen and a Rx for more.
I'm starting out w/ 2u with each meal. This is just a starting-point, of course.
I mentioned re-learning my carb-counting and dose accordingly. She loved this idea, and said she hadn't mentioned it due to Michelle's notes of my 'stubbornness'. So, she's got me going back to the dietician, and a 1-on-1 class on insulin use.
Before I could ask about them, she said that once I get my D under control, and prefferably after my honeymoon is (for sure) over we'll look at pumps. I was pleased to hear this because Michelle had talked bad of pumps, saying they are painful, bulky, insurance won't cover them in my condition, and they need calibrated more than 5xs a day.
All-in-all I love my endo and am going to request seeing her from now on. BTW my A1C in November was 6.4%. I'll get today's A1C when I go back next Monday.

It sounds like some of the info you got on "pumps" was actually referring to CGMS.

Hey, Dan --
I'm coming up on my first endo appt in a LONG time (have let my PCPs handle the diabetes), so I'm pleased to hear about your favorable experience. That 6.4 would be hard to beat in my book, but I bet you do it.
That is one darling little girl, by the way!
Best wishes,

WOW that's good of her to do that.

Yes that's a good thing as you will be comfortable with it and increase if need be. :)

Gee that's a huge step.

Daniel,
Very good news! You are on the road to feeling better. Once you learn carb counting, you'll have a lot more freedom with your food choices while keeping good numbers. The plan you are on with your Endo makes me happy! It pays to care and not be "stubborn"! Michelle probably wasn't the best to deal with that old "stubborness" of yours anyway. Gee, that was the name of my "mean ol' Endo" in KC several years ago!

I was kind of proud of that too. I'm pretty sure yesterday's A1C will be higher than that. I haven't behaved since November, as some of you know. My hope is that from here it will only go down.

Haha, I'm pretty sure you've read me like a book in my previous posts. Either way your right on the money with this. Caring is what I need to do.

Unfortunately I've been the one holding myself back. Michelle's slow, negative manner wasn't much encouragement though!

I sure plan too.
Thanks for all the replies guys! Really, for me, there's nothing like being able to talk to someone who knows what I'm going through. And in my case, most of you guys know what I've got to look forward to. Thanks.

Awesome!
It sounds like you have a great endo and a great (new?) attitude. It seems you've had a bit of mis-communication with this Michelle. The more you learn the more you'll be able to have these intelligent conversations and ask the right questions.
Rock on! :thrasher:

This is a great reminder that Nurse Practicitioner's aren't doctors...

I don't think anyone ever thought they were.
However, what go against all NPs because one is bad? Makes no sense. There's bad doctors too. Some people are good at their profession, other's aren't, no matter what the profession.
With an a1c of 6.4 i sounds like things can't have been too bad.

No, I'm not against all of them...it just bothers me when my friends say they rarely talk to their doctors...the NP is doing all the communicating...that can swing both ways.
I do have a personal beef with "one" NP who had never heard of carb counting and fast-acting insulin...she is/was a friend...so maybe that's my personal prejudice...she worked in an internist office.
I think with the healthcare costs being cut, a lot of NP's trying to juggle a workload that, in some cases, used to be handled by doctors...I guess that's really my point.

Congratulations on finding a doctor to work with you. I'm sure you will find it much easier now to control your diabetes now. And good job on the last a1c! :top:

I work in a GP's office right now. The DOCTORS haven't heard of basing doses on carb counting either. It's just not done in internist offices- those patients are farmed out to specialists.
