View Full Version : Fasting and losing weight?

Hi guys. I went to my checkup today to find out that I was 1cm taller, but ~3kg lighter? They were confused and asked me a lot of questions and in the end they couldn't come up with an answer and just sent me on my way. They said my A1C is 6...it was 6.1 last time, wouldn't it have dropped more than that?

I'm sure I'm still in the stage where my body is still making insulin (for some reason I'm losing my memory faster and faster...I forget what it's called :( Yes I'm only 15 I really don't know what's wrong with me...it only started happening a few months ago), and all my tests are under 9mmol/l, so wouldn't it be lower than that?...

Also, about the weight issue. They said that I either have super metabolism, or there's something else wrong; and I doubt I have super metabolism.

They told me in 3 months it's my 1 year checkup (duh), and that I would have to come in fasting. Right when I heard that I knew they would be happy to do tons of tests on me (wow blood tests are so fun).

I just want to ask, how long do I have to fast for exactly? They never said anything (smart, aren't they?). I'm guessing it's like 10-12 hours...Also, how do you guys deal with it? What do I do if I get a low during the fasting period? That is my biggest question.

I probably have a lot more questions but I'll have to think of them and then I'll post them later.

Thanks for the help once again,
Elliott

When they had me fast I could not eat or drink after midnight. I lost 30lbs in 1 months time. and it took me almost 6 months to get it all back but I got it back. It is hard to deal with at first but it gets better especially now that i talk to people here, the people here are awesome.

They only asked me to fast before I come in for the appointment...not all the time :S

Plus, I never eat after midnight anyways...so what the heck? Do they mean to not eat after midnight and then skip breakfast too? I heard that told my mom to bring my breakfast with me.

I lost the weight before I was diagnosed and then they had me fast with nothing after midnight for one day. You have to bring breakfast because you will need it after the blood work if finished.

Just don't eat and drink after midnight the evening before the tests, and don't eat breakfast until the tests are done. Though you might want to make sure you won't go low during the time you can't eat or drink... Maybe lower basal insulin with a unit or 2? I'm no expert on how to deal with fasting and diabetes:T

Me either...Good thing I don't have to fast for like 24 hours...I'd probably die.

Normally, you will not eat anything between about 8 p.m. and the next morning for your doctors appointment. Some doctors such as cardiologists are more specific about their fasting requirements. (they don't allow caffeine or even caffeine-free sodas)...

From what I've been told...if you should happen to have a low blood sugar while fasting, juice is fine. I actually would probably eat glucose tabs instead of juice....I don't want the fiber and such...just the glucose.

The cardiologist is the one that told me they give diabetics oj if they need glucose during a fasting/test....but check with your doctor. Unfortunately, many lab people don't understand low bloodsugars/diabetes, so you need to talk to your doctor.

It all depends on what time you're planning on having your blood work done.

I usually start fasting (for cholesterol or liver function testing) at 9pm the night before my 7:30am blood draw the next morning. If my endo is performing only an A1c, then no fasting is required.
