My name is Todd, and I’m the husband of a long-time T1 diabetic. She was diagnosed over twenty years ago, and we have been married for sixteen years. We have two girls, who have not developed diabetes, but have shown signs. We have been proactive, and have reigned in their diets. So far, so good.

Myself, I have been involved with fitness for most of my adult life, although not working in the fitness industry. I have recently begun studying to become a certified Personal Trainer, and want to specialize in working with diabetics. This will remain part time however, since I love my current career as an Engineer.

I would put my beautiful bride in the athlete category. A few years ago I began training her to lose weight, as well as better control her BG. We completely revamped her diet, and started her on resistance and cardio training. Since then her BG is MUCH better (I can not recall the last A1C), she has drastically reduced her daily insulin intake, and while she was at it worked off a tremendous about of bodyfat. She has competed in a few 5K’s, usually placing mid-pack in her class, and has recently completed the Gold Medal award in the Presidents Challenge (.

Welcome to you and wife.

Sounds like a niche market but one we all approve of. :)

Keep those girls moving!

Welcome,

Awesome story, but get back with that A1C eh! ;) That's our main measure.. All the healthy activity in the world won't save you if that's high.

I'm curious to hear how her BGs behave during training and how she deals with/prevents highs and lows.

Well, her A1C's are anything but high. She's probably more on the low side, as she has a tendancy to run her BG lower than her doctor (or even myself) would like.

When training in the weight room her BG does fine, and does not budge a whole lot. However, when she jumps on the treadmill, or goes out for a run, it has a tendancy to drop, sometimes 40-80 points. Short interval training makes it come down some, but it's really bad if she is going for a long slow run or walk. And if it's hot out, forget about it.

She is very strict on her diet, typically running 1300-1400 cals when trying to loose weight, and closer to 2000 when maintaining. Her macronutrients run 40% protein|40% carb|20%fat, which she tracks everything that she eats on fitday.com.

We tried to do a low carb, high protein for her before, but her BG was all over the place. Plus, I'm a person of balance, and running the carbs/protein at 40% seems to work very well for me, and it has for her as well. 20% fats are at the bottom of where I like to see them, but not bad.

BTW, she is on a Medtronic pump.

Hi and welcome to the board! Glad to have you here. :D

I'm in Kent! :) In fact, on the 16th of this month, just at the start of mid-winter break, we're having a mini meet and greet in Federal Way. We'd love to meet you and your wife! Look in the Meet and Greet part of this forum for the details.

Have your wife join us on the board here, too. :) The more the merrier!

That's cool. We actually in Kent also. I just put Seattle because nobody knows where Kent is. :D

I'll take a look at the meet & greet area.

Thanks.
