I was diagnosed with Type 2 19 years ago, and probably had high blood sugar for several years before diagnosis, as I had been told my BG's were 'a little high'. For the first 9 years I was on sulphs, and then metformin, until my HbA1C rose up to about 12 or 13, when the endo at our diabetes clinic decided to put me on insulin. I first started on the 70/30 mix, which didn't work well at all, and then we tried all combinations of units and mixes still without achieving good results. I was lucky to have an internet connection and did a lot of browing on diabetes mailing lists and forums, and found that in general the 'new' idea at that time was to use a basal insulin (only NPH available at the time) and a fast acting insulin for meals (luckily Humalog had been approved by then).
I asked the endo if we could try a multi dose regimen, and after a few weeks of trial and error with quantities, it has all worked pretty well since then, and my HbA1C's over the past 4 or 5 years have been 5.8 down to the latest 5.5, so I am happy with that. Once the newer basals came out in Canada, I switched from NPH to Levemir which has been much better.

I don't have any questions at the moment, but am happy to have found a forum which appears to be interesting with knowledgeable folk ready to help when the need arises.
My husband also has Type 2, but is controlled with metformin at the moment, but he hasn't been diagnosed as long as I have.
Cheers
Joan:)

Welcome Joan,

Tons of snow is beautiful, but you can keep it up there, lol! I went to Canada just once and loved it. I only got as far as Calgary from Colorado though . . . and that was when I was just 9 years old. I have fond memories though. We have lots of Canadians here on DF.

Cheers back at you --

Welcome Joan....send some of the snow our way...it NEVER snows here anymore!..and I miss it!

With you and your husband both having diabetes, i'm curious...do you think it makes things easier or harder to deal with? Do you both eat similarly? I'm sure there are a lot of unique challenges to this situation.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your time here...it can become quite addicting!

Thanks to everyone for the welcome. Yes, XMeance, I believe one of the junior hockey teams in the Thunder, and the Colts are also a junior team. I used to be a huge fan of hockey in the 60's/70's when there were only 6 teams in the NHL, but have been put off since then with the diluted skills and increasing violence. I don't really pay too much attention these days to the local hockey scane.
Princesslinda, I find that with both of us having diabetes, it is definiately easier to manage. We can eat the same things and I don't have to worry about a husband who wants to stock the pantry with lots of goodies and fast food items, so it helps that we both have to be careful of our food plan.
Hi SueM in Cornwall U.K. I love your area. I was born in Cardiff, South Wales, so I know and love the south western part of the U.K. both Devon and Cornwall.
Now for all you guys who would like some SNOW, PLEASE send lots of big trucks to cart it away....we have had the whitest winter for many years here in the north east section North America. Roll on Spring!!!
