I've had problems with it for a number of years, but it comes and goes. It'll be bad for a few months and then almost no problems for a few months. I have virtually no problems with constipation, though....when I have problems, they're the opposite. I'll eat a meal, and then within a few minutes my stomach will bloat up like crazy, start making gurgly sounds...and then I have to get to the bathroom SOON. It sucks, especially if I'm at a restaurant. I've found it very closely relates to stress, but the other thing I've found to really make a difference is calcium. I don't drink a lot of milk, so I take calcium supplements. When I'm taking the right amount every day I have virtually no IBS problems. If I start slacking off, the IBS comes back. I had heard that there was a connection between calcium and IBS, so I thought I'd give it a try. Also, greasy foods are WAY more likely to cause problems for me.

As a diabetic, if it hasn't already been done, you might want to ask your doctor about getting screened for celiac sprue, which is another autoimmune disorder where ingestion of wheat, barley and rye and the gluten protein causes the body to attack the lining of the small intestine. Irregularity of bowel movements is a symptom and it is well established at this time that type 1 diabetics are more likely than the general population to have celiac sprue.

I have been dealing with this for years and have been to many specialists and there just is no cure for it. What is worse is quite often if you have it you will develop diverticulitis, and if you think the pain from IBS is bad it is noting compared to the latter.

There are many ibs forums out there to get information from.

ibs forum - Google Search (http://www.google.ca/search?q=ibs+forum&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a)

Also one thing that seems to make the problem worse for me is ingesting diet sugars like spenda etc.

Good luck if you need to talk you can pm me.

as scratch already said i would get screened for coeliacs.

get the tests done before making any alterations to your diet though as you can end up with a false negative if you go gluten free before being tested.

i get similar symptoms, my coeliac screening came back negative so i do not have it, however my symptoms always clear up when i eat a dairy and gluten free diet. it takes about a week for my symptoms to settle down. so i guess i'm gluten and dairy intolerant.

My oldest daughter has had IBS for about 10 years. They scoped her intestines to rule out various aliments & tried a bunch of different meds and eventually found a nightly dose of Elavil (ampriltyline) did the trick! She has to avoid certain foods but she is basically back to normal as long as she does not forget a dose. She does not have depression but as the gastro dr. told us, her guts do! Elavil acts as an anti-spasmotic.
