I'm new to the forums and have been reading for a few days, so I thought I would go ahead and introduce myself.

I was diagnosed about 2 years ago and managed to keep everything under control with diet and exercise. I got tired of testing 3 times a week so stopped testing around May 06. Started feeling tired, grumpy, drinking lots of water, and had to plan trips so I could stop by a bathroom! Both my parents are D, so I guess I got whacked by genetics pretty bad. I went to the doctor late last year and was put on meds. My only A1C was 6.7, but that was two years ago. My blood glucose when I started testing was in the 350+.

I started Metformin (devil of a drug to get used to!) and when that didn't do enough I was put on Glipizide. My fasting bg readings are now around 100!

I go back at the end of Feb for a full blood workup including a testoterone test. Apparently aside from the heart attack risk (My doctor said a D has the same chance to have a heart attack as someone who has already had a prior heart attack) there is emerging evidence that men with low testoterone have great occurances of D. Will be interesting to find out.

Anyway that was quite a bit. I wanted to say hi to everyone and thank ppl for discussing this. It has helped me accept my having D.

Welcome Artlizard,

I'm glad you joined us; your likelihood of taking better care of yourself just went way up! I like your name - Artlizard. I think it takes most people a while to accept their life is forever changed. In funny little ways, having D can be a blessing. It has been for me. It has given me a big appreciation for life I wouldn't have understood if I was "normal". Having a place like this has made my life much better too.

Am testing about 3 times a day to see if I need the extra dose in the morning. Also test to see how different foods spike by bg levels.

Hi and welcome!

Sounds like you're getting things in order now. It's always interesting to see what foods do what. What I find amazing is I can have a plate of pasta and don't spike, but give me one a Thompson English muffin and I spike right up. Whole wheat even.
