I'm new to the forums and have been reading for a few days, so I thought I would go ahead and introduce myself.
I was diagnosed about 2 years ago and managed to keep everything under control with diet and exercise. I got tired of testing 3 times a week so stopped testing around May 06. Started feeling tired, grumpy, drinking lots of water, and had to plan trips so I could stop by a bathroom! Both my parents are D, so I guess I got whacked by genetics pretty bad. I went to the doctor late last year and was put on meds. My only A1C was 6.7, but that was two years ago. My blood glucose when I started testing was in the 350+.
I started Metformin (devil of a drug to get used to!) and when that didn't do enough I was put on Glipizide. My fasting bg readings are now around 100!
I go back at the end of Feb for a full blood workup including a testoterone test. Apparently aside from the heart attack risk (My doctor said a D has the same chance to have a heart attack as someone who has already had a prior heart attack) there is emerging evidence that men with low testoterone have great occurances of D. Will be interesting to find out.
Anyway that was quite a bit. I wanted to say hi to everyone and thank ppl for discussing this. It has helped me accept my having D.
