Aloha, Everyone

I just found out yesterday my AC1 was 6.2%, guess it's the start of Type 2? I know I need to bring it down under 6%.

When I did my blood work last week the test came back at 129 fasting, but through out the day it comes down to a 100 or less. I was really scared, and not wanting to believe it when Doc first told me. At 129 that's why the Doc requested an AC1test.

Hey, welcome.

Our official target is 6.5% but our unofficial one is 6%.

You're low enough that you don't need meds, so you can get a great start and try to beat them off, at least for awhile. A low carb and low GI (glycemic index - google it) diet, regular exercise, and weight loss if needed. Basicallly a healthy lifestyle.

Most importantly, come here regularly, read all the posts, and ask questions. Don't worry if they sound noobish, most questions get asked many many times and people are more than happy to answer them. Knowledge is power!

XMenace,

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm just scared right now, I've been on the internet once I found out about 2 type diabetes, it can get really ugly if not taken care of.

I've been on a "I'm scared to eat anything diet" the last couple days. I'll start a good diet, low in carbs.

Appreciate your advise.

Hi and welcome aboard! To the forums that is...

Your numbers don't sound to bad. You should be able to whip your diabetes into diet and exercise with no problems at all!

Kimo, Welcome ! :shakehand

I avoid rice, potatoes, some bread, flour tortillas, etc. they increase my BG's, even when I take meds.

Your #'s look good.
Why your doc didn't prescribe Metformin, at least?
You may have a new A1C soon, like in about a month, to see how you're doing.

Thanks to all for the encourging advise. With an AC1 of 6.2% should I be on Metformin?

My Doc stated he wanted to try the diet, and weight lost first before any meds. Is this correct??????

If your numbers stay in good control with just diet and exercise then there really is no need for the meds. However if you are a little over weight you may need the meds until you lost enough.

Generally oral medications are ONLY prescribed if diet and exercise cannot get your A1C BELOW 7%. Since you are obviously already below 7% prior to even beginning diet and exercise modifications, I don't think you'd find an M.D. anywhere who'd put you on meds at this point. You are in really great shape getting diagnosed this early...
Welcome aboard!!!

CPT Mike/Tony,

Thanks for the info. I feel better now, plan to work hard to get my AC1 under 6. I'll be deploying to Iraq the 1st of March, you can eat pretty healthy in the messhall, if you make the right choices. Thanks again.

Aloha, Kimo

From my doctor, 3 consecutive fasting readings above 120 and you are diabetic. They recently lowered the standard to catch people earlier on. You may go years before needing to be on meds, but always test regularly so you don't get uncontrollable bgl without knowing it.

And a warm welcome to the forums.
