Hi Everyone :)
My name is Gwen and I found this forum while browsing for diabetic jokes. I've never joined a diabetes forum, which is ironic, considering I am an internet junkie ;)
I was diagnosed with type one at age 9, and I am now 22. Funny story... It was Valentine's Day and our class was having a party, with candy hoorah! My mom came in and yelled, "Gwennie, drop that cupcake!" We then proceeded to the hospital. (I had had my labs taken the day before).
I am excited to meet everyone on here and talk about diabetes stuff, as there is no one in my life who even knows what a "Unit" is or what types of insulin I take :)

Welcome aboard! This is a great place to find information and meet new people! :D
Hi Gwen, welcome!
That is kind of a funny story, but not being diagnosed with diabetes. I do know first hand myself. Did you know why your mom made you drop the cake?
So tell me, who came up as the jokester here in your search for diabetic jokes?
Nice name by the way.

I always say now I should have eaten that cupcake, because that was the last dessert I would ever have without an injection or blood sugar check. In fact, for the first few years of treatment, I didn't see an endo but a regular doctor, who didn't even think I should be eating carbs, much less any sweets! He didn't know much about insulins or carb counting, etc.. Needless to say, until I went to UCSF for treatment, I was pretty sick with highs, lows, and trying to keep up with the growth charts.
I am not sure what exact site led me to this one, as I've been on quite a few these past few days! I started looking for things to cheer me up after I found out my new insurance wouldn't cover "any pre-existing conditions" aka diabetes, and my pump supply pharmacy was trying to convince me to pay cash. So at first I was looking for jokes on type one, as well as insurance info and laws, just to keep myself from crying about the whole ordeal.
The insurance experience made me realize that since the time I was diagnosed I've been dealing with diabetes all on my own, and it might be nice to have other people to talk to about it. Because I've been so independent with my care, none of my family even knows what types of insulin I'm on, what my blood sugars are, etc...
Because I prefer not to discuss it with my friends and family, as they usually just give me the deer in the headlights look if I even mention "diabetes". To have people who can relate to me would be nice, so I joined this forum :)
I know the feeling, I'm in the same boat. None of my friends have diabetes and I'm not about to sit there with them and talk about it. No matter how many times I will explain to someone if they ask that is, they just don't understand. For example; "You need insulin if you are low?" lol... I don't bother talking about it unless someone brings it up, then I am more then happy to talk about it. I feel like a broken record with mother though.
You have no insurance to date? And on a pump. Which pump do you use?

"But... Mom... as long as the hospital is about to take care of me..." *gulps down cupcake*
