i was wondering is there a set time one should fast for a basal test? or is it okay to fast as long as you feel comfortable.

i dont want to end up with a massive liverdump just because i fasted too long.

my current test started at 8am, its now 1.30pm.
i wanted to check my midmorning levels after tweeking them last week. (was going low at lunch), then i thought it was a good idea to check over the lunch period.

i get another low later in the afternoon, i guess that will have to wait until another test huh?

any thoughts? :)

If i understood it right and dont't take my word for it: dont you have breakfast for example and skip lunch, having a dinner at the normal time. If you dont go low or high in that period then you have your breakfast dose + lantus dose correct. Then repeat this process for breakfast and dinner, once you can do all of these then everything is just dandy lol. Maybe i am wrong which might be why ive never tried it :( i would get hungry if i did that :D

I only skip one meal at a time, but some have done 24hr tests. You may experience a liver dump anyway. It will likely happen as soon as you eat something, anything. I always do at lunch when I skip breakfast, but I don't get thema t dinner when I skip lunch.

Sharon,

When I check basal rates, I skip breakfast and lunch for example, and have a snack mid-afternoon. Too short a period doesn't seem like it would be accurate, so I skip 2 meals, not one. But before joining DF, I didn't even know about liver dumping. I don't recognize liver dumping in myself, except for, thankfully, during the night when it saves me!

Good point about length. I try to make my sessions 6 hours. Four of these covers a day, I think :stupido:

so my last meal was 8pm last night, last bolus was 3am (correction bolus).
test began at 8am and ended 2pm...sounds about right then?

i only stopped because i was feeling dizzy and wobbly, although my Bg's were a stable 5.1/91

i wanted to check the mid morning ones before i move on to check the post lunch to evening period ;)

Sounds awesome!

I'd test every half hour after eating for a couple of hours to see how that behaves. It's good to know if you are going to spike or not for those days you want to sleep in. This exercise will ultimately enable you to do that with confidence.
