Hello anyone, I have'nt posted before but have already found very useful info. on these forums. I was diagnosed T2 in Oct 2006 and am still struggling to control my blood sugars. I take Metformin 500mg T.D.S. and Simvastatin nocte. I have periods of stability and then don't seem to be able to control things.I am not perfect with the diet and I drink too much alcohol ( binge once a week) , however I have managed to stop smoking (8 months now) so I have done something positive for my health! It's still a big learning curve for me. I am a registered nurse, but find that I am learning more from fellow sufferers than from Doctors. Hope I can carry learning from you folks. Thanks, John
:)
Welcome to the forums!
Yes there are many variables that impact our day to day living with diabetes. You can do everything right and still have high numbers some days.
The best solution currently available is what we have going on here, that is share information and support fellow diabetics. We have a good group of people here who are more then willing to share information and encouragement.
Feel free to ask any questions. As Nancy said earlier the only dumb question is the one not asked.

Welcome John,
Congratulations on quitting smoking. That's about the best thing you can do for your health. I did it too! I was ready to quit long before I actually did, so it was very simple to just stop.
You'll definitely get ideas and help here. Don't be shy! Glad you joined.

:) Hi
Welcome I am only new to these forums as well but find them great. Good on you for quiting the smokes. I have friends that smoke and know how hard it is for them to stop.
Diabetes can certainly be frustrating at times when you are doing all the right things your readings can be high and other times you think they should be high and they aren't !
I have troube sticking to the diet more often then not and I to am a registered nurse (so know the risks) It's easy to tell people what they should do but living it(diabetes) isn't that easy.
I to am learning heaps on this site
Take care from Alicat61:)

Welcome to the group! I am new myself. Congrats on quitting smoking.
As for your sugar levels, keept trying with the diet and exercise. You can do all things right, but getting proper sleep and controlling (as much as possible) your stress levels all effect your bg levels.

Hi John, welcome aboard! Congrats on stopping smoking, i'm sure that was very difficult.
Regarding diet, do you watch your carbs? For me, avoiding bread, rice, pasta, potatoes goes along way in keeping my blood sugar stable. Still, we all have days when even with our best efforts, the blood sugars just don't cooperate.
Even though you're not really newly diagnosed, a great book for T2s is "Type II, The First Year," by Gretchen Becker. I found it full of useful information. There's a UK version available as well...i'd heartily recommend it.
Glad you found us!

Welcome to the club.
Do you dream of having smoked a cig? I quit 30 years ago and for years I would wake up thinking I'd had one in a dream. Really weird.

Thank you all for your warm welcome, I feel like I belong already, a few people have congratulated me for stopping smoking and I'll thank you for that but it really has'nt been difficult. When I smell smoke now, it makes me feel sick and no-one is more suprised than me - I smoked for 33 years. However, my 14 month old daughter needs her dad, I'll be no good to her dead will I ?
Happy days;)
