That's amazing - especially as Pizza Hut shows 21-28 of grams of Carbs per slice (1/8 pizza).

But how many fat grams and calories that can still damage your health? I love pizza and it has always been a weakness of mine, but 8 slices? Please don't play with fire! ;)

I went to a buffet on Saturday night and was out of control, I even had 2 or 3 desserts. My numbers were similar to yours until the next morning when they really jumped.
Worst of all I had cravings for carbs all weekend and I did indulge in potato chips, and other high carb items.
My numbers were okay during the day but sky rocketed the next morning.
I thought I was so safe on Saturday night.

pah... i have pizza like, once every 6 months, its hardly going to "damage" my health...
I haven't spiked yet. I was ery hungry, i usually keep it down to 5 or 6 slices lol.
It's strange... i never seem to have an issue with pizza or chinese take away food... but so many others do!

Ya, 13g seems very low. Was this a small 9" pizza?
It's a great way to enjoy life and validate that what you are doing is correct! Gr8 job! Kim while I agree that it adds risk, this is one of the reasons we shoot for great control - to enable these occaisional escapades. As long as you do the things you need to do to stay safe like test, test, and test, go for it!

I find that I can eat pizza without much problem as long as it is thin crust pizza. The thick/regular crust really does a number on my bg.
Good experiment Stu. :D

Sounds delish! I always say to have a cheat once in awhile keeps a person in line better than if youre constantly craving and feeling deprived! I love "garbage" pizza, EVERY kind of topping you can imagine. Stuffed Crust is so nummy!

Yes Stu is a very good experiment. I am like you Cindy I am fine with the thin crust and get away with some bolus but the regular Pizza then I would do the bridge bolus which is a 16U now and a 16U later like 2 hours later and of course test!!
And it's my weakness is pizza, Just love it YUM!!! :D :nurse: :star:

Not to mention the calories... Which can be pretty high. About two days worth of total calories for someone on a 1600 calorie per day diet, which I having been making a good effort to stick to.
My wife watches all these health and fitness shows on TV and she told me about how she had seen on one of them that someone said a Large Pizza Hut Meat Lover's Pizza had 3500 calories. I was curious about that, but never looked it up. Using that .PDF file you posted a link to I checked and sure enough, even the thin crust ones I thought were better were really not...
Based on the total combined calories and carbs in 8 slices, a 14" Large Thin N' Crispy Meat Lover's Pizza has 3440 calories and 232 grams of carbs, if you subtract the 16 grams of fiber. (248 if you don't...)
I used to eat one of those on an average of twice a week. If I were to do that now that I know I'm diabetic and trying to stick to a 1600 calories \ 135 carbs per day diet, I probably wouldn't get to eat much of anything else for the rest of the week... http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i160/axelslingerland/rofl3.gif

Wow Stu.. nice job! Pizza is the holy-grail of carb-counting! I've gotten it right a couple times, but usually it sends me way off the mark unfortunately.

I'm lucky to be able to handle both pizza and chinese food without too much of a problem. I don't eat pizza much, but i do eat chinese food A LOT :D
Congrats on the good numbers though :D

My son loves pizza too but I tell you he has to count high because it plays havoc with him - his numbers sky rocket if he is not careful.

About once a month we have the cheese personal pan pizza's. My son was diagnosed 3 months ago and we have found that he shoots up with the pizza. The personal is 71g and he took enough insulin to cover that and 6 hours later his BG is 220. He is having a snack and another insulin shot to bring him back down.
How do others who are sensitive handle this issue? I always worry about messing up and him going too low if I offset, although this is the 3rd time eating this pizza and having over 200 high, so I know this is the cause. Also gotta wonder if maybe Pizza Huts carb count is off. When I fix pizza's at home, we don't have this issue.

I've learned that the fats in the pizza's cheese and meat etc often delays the spike for many h-o-u-r-s. I've not had pizza since Dx, but I have been known to scoop the toppings off a slice or two with relative immunity afterward.
I recently had an experience like that you'd mentioned with a relatively low carb Chinese dish. That was a gift that kept on giving for a good two or three days... Even my fasting numbers were up by a good 20-30 points until my system settled back down.
Oy.

I love pizza too. I eat the thin crust pizza, and I only get vegetables on mine (way less greasy), then I let my dogs eat the actual crust. I can usually eat half of a large pizza and be ok. However, I don't do this very often. It's nice to splurge every now and then.

Mmm. Had pizza last night. I adore pizza and hubby and I get about one a month, so I've had a lot of time to play around in the last year to get it right :) And while my spikes wind up bad, they come down easily.
The usual: I bolus for about 70-75g per 2 slices. I set it up to a 30 minute square bolus. My sugar usually hits 180-220 at the 2h mark, but drops back down to normalish by 4 (I occasionally have to do a correction for 140 or so).

What kind of Chinese do you eat?
If this question was addressed to me, the Chinese food that made my BG bounce for some time was Kung Pao Chicken with Peanuts...no rice.
Generally, I can eat some Chinese, if I'm careful in my choices and quantity. I've found that chicken wings (no breading), Egg Fu Yong (minimal gravy), Chicken Chow Mein (no hard noodles), and 1-2 pieces of Beef Teriyaki (no duck sauce) give me an acceptable rise...maybe 20-26 points. Heck, even an Atkins shake does that.
The Kung Pao, which I love, turned out to be a curse.
My BG rose by about 80 points and stayed there for a full day... My numbers were somewhat elevated for 2-3 days afterward that.
Hey, Bruce...I'm in Central Massachusetts, too!

Fat content is the likely reason for different outcomes between home and pizza hut pizza. Fat can extend carbs that might process in say 1 or 2 hours, out to 4 or 6 hours in some circumstances. I find with high carb foods like pizza, this can mean more insulin required all up - but the delivery timing is important.
Dealing with it. First, don't expect to deal perfectly with it, it may be a problem food and should be treated as such (ie, don't have it often). Second, you could try spliting the bolus - say half before, half at 2 hours afterwards. As I said, I often need more insulin for this kind of problem than if it was just carbs, so the before and after might add up to a lot more than a typical bolus for those carbs. There is just no way to approach this apart from trial and error.
Third, the way I deal with it, is with a pump, that lets you set your bolus to be released slowly over a set amount of time, such as 3 hours. Or, to have a percentage now, and a percentage times release. This goes a long way to making fatty pizza more viable for me on occasions. I would still rate it problematic.
