Can anyone recommend a good carb counting book.
It’s a girly book :D but very useful none the less, it contains carbs/fibre/net carb/cal/protein/fats for over 2000 foods. Its pocket size so you could take it out and about if you don’t mind the picture of a bikini on the front. ;)

Welcome to the forum.
You may want to consider a digital food scale instead, one with a built in library of foods. http://www.diabetesforums.com/forum/carbohydrate-and-calories/24618-got-myself-salter-1450-a.html

Thanks for the advice, I was just thinking about getting a scale. What do you think of the Salter 1450 , are you happy with it ?
The Calorie King book is what I use. If the thing you are looking for is not in there, something very close is, so you can make an educated guess.
How embarassing to admit, but I rarely weigh things. When I do, I use a $7 Medport Vita Minder from my local health food store. I weigh postage on it too.
I find the best reference for portions is the dominos-deck of cards, palm of the hand measurements found all over the internet. Just in case you don't have a scale along.

I don't have a Salter. My scale just weighs things. I primarily use carb labels. If I need to know something else, I ask doctor Google: "carbs carrots" (http://www.google.com/search?q=carbs+carrots&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1)

I was given The Calorie King, compliments of Medtronics, and it's been great so far, just like Mich said. I also google specific foods and carb amounts -- works great.

I use the Calorie King book also, and if you don't find what you are looking for in the book, you can go online and you will usually find it there.

I keep Calorie King in my kitchen...will sometimes look at the "Ethnic" group before I go out for dinner to remind myself just how many high carbs are in some of my favorite foods...
I just bought the Salter 1450 and really like it...haven't used it much. It's a little bit of a pain to "type" in the food names...it's on a keypad like a phone...not a regular text pad.
But anyone who's a big texter on a phone won't find it a problem...I'm just an old dinasaur, I guess. I mainly bought it to weigh fruit and rolls...and such.

The Ultimate Guide to Accurate Carb Counting. (http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Guide-Accurate-Carb-Counting/dp/1569242747" target="new) Great read and good getting started primer to carb counting.

I like the Calorie King book as well....and I also go under dietfacts.com to look up restaurant menus and brand name foods for carb and calorie contents. I print out menus from the restaurants we often frequent and keep them in the care for a quick look BEFORE I get to the restaurant...cuts down on temptation for me.

I second Shawn's recommendation on "The Ultimate Guide...". I'm just getting started with it, and so far, so good. The author, Gary Scheiner, also wrote "Think Like a Pancreas", which is oft recommended on this forum. He's a Type 1 and has a decent sense of humor. (Psst: get it from Amazon instead of your local bookstore to save $.)
