View Full Version : A somewhat-unexpectedly sweet Valentine's evening...

...in the form of BG spiking to 10.5(188) @ 1900 local time.

It seems to have been due to basal fade, as I'd been 5.8(104) @ 1600, yet feeling "cloud-headed" when I was. No lispro or reg-R on board, and digestion should have been complete.

However, I'd showered at 1345... a decision I made after having eaten and bolusing. The result? A 43(2.4) hypo.

I knew that showering speeds up my lispro and reg-R. Evidently, it may also accelerate the action of N. (Were this not the case, my hyper should have happened before 1600.)

One more discovery, I suppose.

More-detailed explanation: Glargine begins fading at 22h. To deal with this, I shoot it at 1730... use 2U extra NPH (~5 hr finish) at lunch... then harness the Lantus stacking at dinnertime.

Oh, well. Combine 3U of lispro (worth 75mg/dL / 4.2mmol/L), the glargine stacking, and a nap... and I awoke with 70(3.9). :)

2U worth of dates, covered with lispro, plus three extra to aim for the 90s(5-5.5)... and I hope to go to bed soon.

Anyone else have a sweet Valentine's? More than 11 dates this evening (31 dates all day)? ;)

So let me get this straight. You're on 4 different types of insulin? According to your profile anyway. Humulin R is bad news, friend and NPH are both very unpredictable. Also 188 isn't terribly bad.

I was happy with my high of 221 today :dontknow:

That's correct.

Humulin R is bad news, friend and NPH are both very unpredictable.

Lispro acts _way_ too quickly for most foods. Everyone keeps telling me how unpredictable R and N are, but I generally have better luck with them than with lispro. I use anywhere from one to three of the bolus insulins (mixed), depending on what I'm eating and when.

Where I got into trouble yesterday was taking a shower after bolusing. I know better than to shower after lispro or reg-R, but thought I'd be in and out in time; I was wrong. What surprised me was that the shower also affected reg-N activity... I've never had it finish within three hours before.

Also 188 isn't terribly bad.

I try to stay in the low 90s, and start feeling bad around 120 +/- 10. On a good day, I range 70-130. On average, 60-140. Anything outside that is bad. Going 43-188... yuck.

Eek. I'd be miserable. Jan 16, I hit 228; that's my only above-200 reading so far in 2008. (I had a reading of 197 another time, and have had a few in the 180s.)

Lows? 34 on New Years, 39 on Jan 8 and Jan 11; everything else 40 or above.

Don't get me wrong... I hate hypos, especially below 55 or so... but 55 feels better than 155.

Wow.

200 is my TARGET.

I'm typically between 300 and 600.

As my docs tell me, "time. give it time."

If I drop below 200ish, I start going hypo.

Also as my three endos tell me, "everybody is different. You're just an anomaly."

I also use R. I inject a *LOT* of R throughout the day (30-50 units every 90 minutes). On top of 410 units of Lantus in a 24hour period (210units, then 200 units at 12 hour intervals)

Best of luck to you!!!

You were down to 2.4. At that level there's a good chance you got a liver dump.

A single 10.5 is barely a ripple let alone a spike

Have you done detailed testing to confirm lispro drops you that fast? It will be tough to eliminate the impacts of all these insulins. I personally doubt lispro acts too quickly for anyone. I'd look harder for other explanations.

I don't even know where to start with that post. Are you on oral meds too?

Neurontins for the neuropathy
Restoril for insomnia (they don't do anything for me but make me stoned... I will sleep maybe 2 to 3 hours on one)
Vasiopril(sp?) -- it's a low dosage for preventative maintenance for the kidneys (they are supposedly in good shape -- slight loss in function in one of them, though)
potassium-chloride tablets (I've got electrolyte problems as well)

Then the OTCs --
80ish mg aspirin (been doing that since I was a teen)
1000mg melatonin I take at night

However, it is my liver the docs are interested in -- just due to the amount of ketone I'm always peeing out.

What sort of increase does one see with a liver dump? And after how long? Any other signs?

FWIW, I was 5.8 at 2 hr after the hypo... the 10.5 was another three hours later.

100% complete within 90 minutes, unless I'm starting with high BG. It's wickedly fast.

And you're not type 2?!

And you're not type 2?!

Docs all say I am type 1. I've never been overweight, I never eat sweets, and I've always eaten healthy. I've always moderately exercised.

With the exception of a few years of smoking many years back -- I've always been a healthy person.

I inquired about that a few times. The doctors all insist that I am indeed a type 1. I have a lot of doctors as well.

You're double diabetic at the very least. That much insulin would kill you if you had the level of sensitivity most type 1s have. I meant to ask if you were on oral meds for insulin resistance. You should be, if you're not.

Wow, my pen doesn’t even go that high :( and I didn’t know they made pens that did. Do you exercise? That would help to bring down your insulin resistance and i agree with funnygirl. Do you see an endo or just a normal doctor? If you don’t see an endo can I suggest u get one.

Back on topic, I didn’t think showering could affect your bg but obviously it can. As the romantic man that I am, I stayed at home sitting in my room wondering what the f*ck happened ;) So no it wasn't very sweet. Its oki though all is not lost.

I don't use pens. I use 100unit syringes. My Lantus injections are split up with three injections, then two injections.

A quote from a previous post of mine:

I'm actually closer to Gainesville than I am to Atlanta (I'm pretty much on the Hall County border). I've got three endos, two GPs, then the eye doc, foot doc, neurologist (two of 'em) then the odd assortment that like to question me during my doctor visits. I'm in the process of hooking up with a doctor and a (or some?) grad students at Emory to be some student's thesis. This is all expected to happen this coming Fall. So, I'm well taken care of.

None of my doctors want me on insulin resistance meds due to the rare risk of liver damage. My liver is already flooding my system with ketone, so we've been making sure nothing I take touches my liver.

I SINCERELY apologize for this threadjack, Eddy.

My week is ruined! It's the worst thing to happen to me in months! How dare you!

;)

No big deal. The thread began with pointless middle-of-the-night babbling (and bad puns about "sweet" and "dates")... so I'm glad to see the thread serving something of a purpose. :)

Sorry, i didnt read all of this thread. I understand what your saying i just hate to see someone suffering like you must be. Hope you manage to sort it out with that all help en all.

You need a pump with a tank of insulin on a trailer to tow around with you at the rate you’re going :(. Oh and not forgetting Duracell batteries :D
