My turn to brag

I'm definitely putting in my time in the waiting rooms this month, between my doctor, the dentist, the eye doc, the endo, the diabetes educator, and the vet. (Okay, that last one was an appointment for my cat.:D )

Yesterday was the eye doc. Not enough change in vision to warrant changing my prescription, and that tiny tiny tiny tiny (yes, she used four "tinies") spot in my left eye hasn't changed/grown/moved/multiplied in two years of tracking it.

Today was the endo. Haven't been to one since college, when the visit was an incredible disappointment (he didn't look at my log book even when I offered it). This woman was very thorough (IMO), acknowledged my experience, and gave me some good pointers. Not bad. The highlight, however, was my A1C, which in November was 7.3 and today was 6.6. WOO HOO! I gave the lab tech a high five, and even bragged to the guy giving samples of turkey breast at Safeway. (I asked if he knew what an A1C was, and he did, and he congratulated me.)

So I'm just pretty happy right now. Oh, I didn't have any cavities last week either. Maybe I should play the lottery?

I definitely think you deserve a pat on the back Leafbear. I know I always dread all the visits to endo, dentist and eye doctor. Job well done. Keep up the good work and I hope your eye visits continue to tell you that your 4x's tiny spot has not grown!

For any Type of Diabetes, it shoudl be at or below 6.5, according to the AACE (American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists)

BTW, on the A1C for Type 2... the endo talked today some about the ACCORD study, which was shut down because people were having heart attacks while they were trying to better their A1C. But I also found that a newer study, ADVANCE, did NOT get similar results. h t t p : / / w w w . sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/02/080214092156.htm So, I dunno. Probably both have been discussed on this site already; I didn't look. I just wanted to FYI, not discourage or scare anyone.:(

On a more lighthearted note, DH asked me if maybe I should have slipped the lab tech $20 so she'd keep "giving me" good A1C scores. (He also told me "good job".:) )

I have a conversion table that is dated the year 2000. It is significantly different that the one shown in the link shiftor just posted. For a HbA1c of 6% the Mean Blood Glucose readings are given as 115 mg/dL or 6.3 mmol/L. That seems more reasonable that the numbers given in the link at 135 mg/dL or 7.5 mmol/L. Clearly one of these or maybe both are incorrect. Anyone have any additional input on this?

I've gone by the formula used in Shiftzor's table. However, for the linear regression relating A1c to average BG, r-squared is by no means 1. (I forget what it is.)

In English: "Your mileage will vary. It's an imprecise and inexact science."

It may not make much difference but these tables list the blood glucose reading as a "mean". In statistics this is different term than an "average".
