Hi, I was diagnosed Type 2 about 6 weeks ago & hey.. it was great to have a name to why I was feeling so bad the past few years.
Lurking on the boards here has been a great help as I come to terms with this new lifestyle.
I've had an appointment with a nurse educator & soon to start a 4 week education session.
I'm managing the D with diet & exercise & all seems to be going well for now.
Average blood sugar is 6.1ug
I take readings first thing in the am & 2 hrs after meals

Hi and Welcome Adiantum,

When I was diagnosed, I was also glad there was a name to why I was feeling so bad! Welcome to DF, and you may already know there are plenty of people who will be happy to give you opinions and advice -- just ask anything whenever you want!

Just an Aussie note . . . yesterday I was at "World Market" and I was very disappointed I couldn't find any Vegemite! I think I would like it! I may just get on line and order some.

Hi Jan, Thank you for the lovely welcome.
Vegemite is a great food but I dont know any American that likes it. I've even sent pics on how sparingly to use it at first but not even that worked. Do try it one day when you can, it's a great food.
It's a wonderful feeling to have found this forum. A real comfort zone

Hi adiantum and welcome to DF :) I'm your neighbour down here in New Zealand. You've definitely found the right place to be surrounded by wise people who know what you're going through.

Ditto No American I've met has ever appreciated Marmite or Vegemite. And yet it's quite a staple food for us down under!

Hi Emm, I wonder if our love of Vegemite & Marmite is because we were introduced to it as baby's.

This place is really full of the wisest people. I'm still feeling dissapointed in the medical profession. So many doc's that I'd seen couldn't diagnose it.
One, herself is a diabetic, yet didnt recognise it, nor this cursed itch & prescibed cream for the rash that's not to be used on the face.
Another had me tested & said I was borderline a few yrs ago, yet made no mention of it since. She also prescribed an unsuitable cream for the rash.
Luckily for me she was on leave one day & I had to see her replacement as the kidney infection returned once again & I wanted more anti biotics.
She simply said. I'ts your diabetes. Then pointed to all the ailments in my files that Ive had over the years & said Its all part of D.
What a Woman !!! I'm so thankful to her.
It was about 4hrs later I found this forum & feel safe at last

Greetings Adiantum and welcome to the forum!! (smiles and waves) I too am new to this forum and to being diagnosed with diabetes. I was diagnosed the end of Dec and am patiently waiting to get assessed prior to seeing an Educator and Dietician. This group has been wonderful at helping me to understand more about my diabetes, and just being able to communicate with others that have been going through or have gone through the same thing is very comforting to me. I do agree with you about the positive feeling of knowing that there was a reason for feeling the way you have been. I was chalking my symptoms up to just working too hard. (giggle)

Again, welcome and I look forward to getting to know you better through your posts. :)

:) G'day from another Aussie and another New South Welshman at that. This site is the best an you learn heaps. As for doctors you have to shop around. I travel over 3 hours to see my GP who is great with Diabetes.(learnt more about me in 1/2 an hour than the other had in 3 years) I have been seeing her for years.I see a local gp for everything minor. As A registered nurse I feel comfortable telling him what I need:D
Well Take care and keep on learning From alicat61:)

Hi anthill, Dont we have some spectacular ant hills in oz.

Mornington Peninsular is a stunning place, I was down there a few years ago for a wedding at the naval base.

There does seem to be a few aussies online now.
Maybe because its our after dinner hour?

1.5 is just called Adult Onset Diabetes as it's the same treatment as 1's. :)
So is there any more Aussies out there. :D

Vegemite? *shudders*

Nope, never could get a taste for it. I still have a tiny jar around somewhere that I use for friends who have never tried it. I really enjoy watching their faces shrivel up after the first taste. :D

Peter -- it's you I first learned about Vegemite from! I like hummus on toast, and if something is "healthy", I generally learn how to like it! I'm ordering some online, because my curiosity is getting the best of me. And I'll report the truth about what I think of it!!

I've always had a romanticized view of Australia. Amazing accents you all have! I'm not totally ignorant -- I know it's not all Croc Dundee land!!

Jan, just be sure to spread it THIN!
and I mean THIIIIIIN. It's great stuff but when it's spread with any thickness at all it's just too much.

It goes well with grainy bread and real butter :D

Really!! :), Gee I do advocate that this is a great place and you're are right as many Americans visit our great land.

Hey that's a great idea Jan. :D

Well done Jan, but do take emm's advice & spread it thinly.
At first, half a teaspoon is more then enough on a slice of toast.

( Oh emm, those were the days when we could have real butter ;)

The food value is great ..in metric
energy 40kj
protein 1.3g
fat. less then 1g
carbs . less then 1g
sugars, less then 1g
niacin 2500ug , thiamin 550ug ,riboflavin430ug folate 100ug
sodium 174mg
Its yummy on fresh bread, toast , or on toast topped with a poached egg ,or I put 1 desertspn full in a caserole

Hi, another newbie here from Victoria, very friendly & helpfull people here, a great place to learn, ...another vegemite lover too, i also do think that spreading vegemite thinly is the only way to eat it, love it on toast with a poached egg on top, i am making myself hungry now :D
