My vision improved a lot, but then went back

Prior to diabetes, my vision was about 20/50, or -1.75 in my right eye and -2.25 in my left eye and i wear contacts. While I was in the hospital during my diabetic coma, my vision improved greatly over 2 or 3 days. It must have been 20/20 or darn close to it. Shortly when I returned home, my vision would get blurry when I put on glasses or contacts and it was so weird, I noticed I had near perfect vision. Then, over the next few days, my vision slowly got worse, and now its back to my original pre-diabetic vision. I know diabetes affects vision but I thought permanently. :confused:

Back when I wore contacts, before diabetes, I would wake up some days and see perfectly well for a couple of hours. The explanation I was given was that the surface of the eye would sometimes retain the corrected curvature of the lenses imparted by the contacts.

From my experience and other reports on here changes from diabetes often revert to prediabetes after lowering bg levels. A good eye doctor, knowing you have diabetes, will not fit you for corrective lenses unless your levels are near or lower than a 100(6).

For about a week or so after I got out of the hospital I was amazed that I could see so good without my glasses--which I had worn for about 30 years. Could see fine without them. I was so happy with that but . . . that didn't last. Also, I was also told just the other day that they couldn't check me for my prescription for glasses if my sugar was high. He made another appointment, but told me to cancel it if sugar was over 150. With 14 years of diabetes, that was the first time anyone said that. No wonder I can't half see out of these glasses the way my sugars bounce around.

Same thing happened to me. After starting on insulin 2 days later my eyesight was 20/20 after 14 yrs of wearing glasses.. it only lasted 2 weeks but it was nice. Now my eyesight is back to normal I was amazed when it first happened.

Same thing with me.Those times i didnt need any glasses but not have a perfect vision.When i first diagnosed and after having the first insulin shots my eyes become like the eagles eyes but then turned to normal in few weeks..

In my opinion there may be relation with the iv drag..cause twice i was about get into coma.I never lost a my consciousness but started to vomit up uncontrollablely and eventually i was admitted in the hospital both times and after the iv drags my vision become better than general for a short period of time.

My Endo told me that your eyesight can flucuate day to day based on what your BG is. I find that my eyes get better as I get a better hold on my BG.

today i had an eye exam, and my eyes have gotten stronger :eek: This has been 2 months after diagnosed, so he won't provide me with new contacts for a few more weeks.

I had a similar experience around the time I was DX'ed. In fact I have to thank my optician for sending me to the Doctor to be checked.

Over a period of about 3 weeks my sight was getting worse, then the thirst kicked in followed by pratically taking up residence in the bathroom. Anyhow went to Opto, she was surprised at the difference since she had checked me 6 months earlier and told me to get to the Doctor and be checked for Diabetes. Then when I started getting my BG under control my eyesight became incredible, my wife used to joke that if it improved any further I'd have x-ray vision. This perfect sight last about 4 weeks and slowly slipped back towards my original prescription even though my BG continued to improve. Anyhow I'm 4 months post DX, my vision is still slightly better than it was and I'm making an appointment to get eyes checked next week as I want to get new contacts and glasses.

Same thing here.
In the beginning my vision impoved like you wouldn't believe.
The improvement lasted about 3 months and then rapidly returned to the orginal setting.
My eye Doc told me it's not unusual.
