:( Hi,

My 12 year old son is using the quickset infusion sets for his minimed 722 pump. The problem is that when he sweats a lot or is in water for more than 5 minutes, they fall out. I was just wondering if anyone else has that problem or knows of any solution. The sets are expensive and the supply company that we use will not send us any extra sets.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks :)

When I was camping with the scouts during the summer, I had the same issues with sof-sets. I changed to quicksets to partially solve the problem and added use of tincture of benzoin as site prep.

First, I'd clean the area with an IV Prep wipe which has alcohol and some sticky stuff it it.
Then I would apply the tincture of benzoin.
Then the quickset.

Worked like a charm for me except the tincture of benzoin is smelly but I got used to it.

they will usually fall off for me if i swim or get them wet for more then a few minutes. They do that since they are fabric i hear. I hear you can use watertight eh plaster, or whatsitcalled, like a bigger bandaid, you put over the infusionset to keep water from reaching it.

Morrisma,

Thanks for the advice. But I have another dumb question, where do you get the benzoin? Can you buy it over the counter at any pharmacy? I just have never seen it before. Thanks.

I got it at a well stocked local pharmacy (City Pharmacy) near my old home in Elkton, MD. They really carried a lot of oddball stuff like that. Never tried online. If you have a good pharmacy nearby, ask them for it. I'll bet they can order it if they don't carry it. One bottle lasted more than a year.

I also tried the over-bandages that thomasb recommended but they were extraordinarily frustrating for me due to peeling & placing issues.

IV Prep and benzoin really did the trick for me. Note: DO NOT get the stingless type of iv prep - just the smith & nephew standard iv prep. The stingless or stingfree (or whatever they were called) resulted in the sets falling off very quickly. I threw a box of them away a few years back so I wouldn't use them by mistake.

I have used the Quick sets for 15 months now and have had only one almsot fall out. I wear them for 3 to 4 days and have sweated a lot in the summer and went swimming in the salt water for a long time. I rarely have a problem. I use the IV prep all the time and make sure the area is well prepped before I insert it. If Ido see one starting to peel up a little I use tape to keep it in place until I change. This has worked very well for me.

The stuff is also known as Friar's balsam. It's standard at any pharmacy I believe. I dab some on the set after it's already on using a q-tip. Make sure it's dry before covering with clothing as it will stick to anything.

At the diabetes camp I help with in the summer we use Mastisol and Detach-all to help with this problem. The Mastisol is the adheseive and the detach-all is the remover... Sounds similiar to the product mentioned a few posts ago...

I had several dislodgements with Quick Sets during my first month of pumping last year. ome friends recommended Sure-T's. I have used those for 7 months now and I have never had a problem. I can take three long showers and the Sure-T is still glued tight. I recommend them highly!
