Hello,
I have been a type one from 87, and from Canada. I am now living in Fiji, so needless to say its been a change. I have had to change my insulin, was taking lantus at night and humalog at meals for the last 5 or so years, and cannot get that here, so was switched to a mix and taking it twice per day....
Its been working pretty good, after the trial period of trying to get the dosage right, but I am just unsure of how to track or use an eating plan...
I was counting carbs before, however that doesn't really work now with the mix insulin....so have just been trying to eat healthy and small amounts. Being in Fiji and the food selection is also hard sometimes, as there is not always nutrition info available for the food.
Any suggestions?
Thanks and have a blessed day.

I guess you will have to go back to eating fixed amounts of carbs at each meal, and timing your meals to coincide with peak action of the insulin you injected much earlier. You won't be able to cover whatever you eat anymore. I could probably go back to that modus operandi quite easily, as I eat similar meals from day to day. Especially breakfast, which contains hardly any carb.

So how are things going in Fiji? It is a beautiful place. But is the ongoing political instability affecting you at all?

Hello Blue Sky,
Thanks very much for your response, its been many many years since I followed the "old" style of eating plans, ha ha, but am sure trial and erroe will be the phrase in this case. I am trying hard to eat around the same everyday, but it can be hard with the types of foods eaten here, but am learning as I go along and have just today infact found a pretty helpful list of foods and how much should be eaten through this website!
Things in Fiji are wonderful, I very much love it here and the polital instability has really not affected me at all. We have never been in danger, and not even really noticed anything of a change since it happened. It is a terrific country and if you ever get a chance (since I see you are close) a visit here would really bless your life!
Thanks again and have a blessed day!

When I was first put on a mix insulin, I had to watch what I ate very carefully, which meant lowering my carbohydrate intake to a bare minimum. I also found that walking right after my evening meal helped keep the blood sugar within range. I followed that routine for almost 2 years before switching over to a pump.

Good Luck!

Karen

Hi Karen,
Thanks very much for the information, so you counted your carbs then with the mix, or did u go off of the choices style, and how did u find out how much of each, the doctors here don't really know this and just say eat right, which is really quite useless, ha ha.
Thanks again and have a great day.
