 I would like to know if you are talking aspirin or have been advised not to due so because you have retinopathy.

I take it... I'm pretty sure I would have told my eye doctor when I first saw hm. I just had laser surgery following a series of avastin shots for retinopathy. But, your question has made me "wonder". I see the eye doctor tomorrow for another set of eye pictures -- I will confirm whether or not he's okay w/ me taking it.

(Thanks for bringing this up!)

I've asked eye doctors many times. They have no issues with taking 81mg of Aspirin. "If you are going to hemmhorrage, you are going to hemmhorrage. That won't make any difference."

I take 81 mg, dont have any retinopathy, but never asked my eye dr. about it.

What concerns me though is that I've read that for many type 2 diabetics, 81mg may not be enough and that they should take an adult aspirin each day. This is what I do.

It seems I remember when I asked my eye Doctor about the aspirin he said it would not cause a problem . The bleeding was old . I am now on a blood thinner for 6 mos for the vein occlusion and that won't hurt either he said.

Jill, how many Avastin shots did you have to have?Just wondering I have had 3 so far.

I googled "should you take aspirin wth retinopathy" and several studies came up.

I had 3 avastin shots in each eye, then light laser surgery (the kind that doesn't hurt).

I do have Retinopathy.

Today, the doctor said not to use the adult aspirin unless my other doctor said to. He said 1 baby asprin per day is okay.

And, I get to have 3 more avastin shots (oh lucky me). There is still fluid (but not blood per doctor). May have to have a 2nd light touch of the laser following these next shots (only in my right eye).

The study results are inconclusive, but there is no evidence that aspirin causes increased bleeding. It seems that large aspirin doses could have a beneficial effect on retinopathy. It raises the risk of other health problems, though, like stomach bleeding .... Here is a BMJ editorial on the subject :

Aspirin for diabetic retinopathy -- Kohner 327 (7423): 1060 -- BMJ (http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/327/7423/1060)

Just looking at your responses, as well as those on other forums dealing with the same issue, its no wonder we can become so easily frustrated in dealing with our diabetes. I think its easier to shoot down a satellite, then it is to take care of our body.
