These two articles discuss "metabolic syndrome" and obesity.
Interesting how they explain what low calorie sugars do to our body/psyche somehow. Sugar satisfies the eating drive and then you quit. Low calorie sugars cause the body to not even detect that eating has occurred.

Metabolic syndrome I: diabetes | The battle of the bulge | Economist.com (http://www.economist.com/science/displaystory.cfm?story_id=10688550)

Metabolic syndrome II: obesity | Sweetness and light | Economist.com (http://www.economist.com/science/displaystory.cfm?story_id=10688627)

Of course, I don't eat low calorie - I am not made of chemicals - I am made of biology, so I eat biological stuff... except for lantus in the morning, and humalog at meals.

So basically, if i lower my A1c I increase the chances of heart attacks and if i have a high A1c i risk the chances of complications. :(

I think sweeteners making mice fat is interesting since I have noticed that since I have Splenda with my herbal tea (1 tablet) and only 2-3 cups a day, when I have chocolate I do tend to eat it all. However I can’t say they are linked, maybe I should try without Splenda and see if I can resist the urges to guzzle chocolate. It’s all speculation though nothing proven in humans. ;)

Never, never, never let anything interfere with the chocolate. :D

There is no such animal as a sugar that is not made of chemicals.

Dan do you eat honey as it is natural? I switched to honey years ago thinking I was doing the family a good thing, but eventually went back to raw sugar for them. When my hubby was stationed in Hawaii, they all chewed sugar cane as a treat. Of course I dont eat any sugar now and am weaning myself off Splenda, too.

Honey was a story on the news last night.
There is a company making wound healing wraps using honey, as things don't grow in honey - viz the pyramids had honey that was thousands of years old.
I use honey, in small quantities, as any of the sweet stuff is taxing to my system as my system does not produce insulin using the organs that I had when I was birthed of my mother. I started using sacharrin 33 years ago when diabetes became a routine for my life, but that cache of chemical sugars got real olde after I didn't use it for 20 years. It tastes wrong, and as I have read thru the years, it is really not any good for the body. You can learn more by watching the movie online titled Sweet Misery. Here is a link to the movie at google video, fyi.

It tells how aspartame would not have passed the FDA except that Donald Rumsfeld was the ceo in early 1980's and pushed it thru with his political clout.
Aspartame/splenda is bad stuff for our bodies.
As persons who know how sweeteners harm our body systems, we do ourselves more harm using aspartame/splenda than we do using less raw sugar, sugar, or honey when we want sweet. Just eat less - but of course that is not an american way... rather, that is not an acceptable western mindset.
So, we kill ourselves, and/or cause ourselves great problems using these chemicals as sweeteners.
While much of the online rant against splenda is radical, there is some truth about the effects these chemicals have on our body. In answer to EasyType2 I place sugar and honey in a biological realm - not a chemical realm. These come from flora and not from a Monsanto factory.
Okay, RANT OFF.

I love the American mind set, so what your saying is because America said it was safe to use the rest of the world followed. I fear not, there have been quite a few studies into these chemical sugars and I don't doubt that they have side effects. The problem is nothing has been proven its all theory, is there actually any conclusive proof that shows Aspartame or Splenda is bad for you?

Hey Mike, I'm with you there partner. :T

Hands off the chocolate and no one will be hurt. :secruity:

Aww Cindy, I am in the best place for chocolate although it can melt here, But then it don't last too long watching it melt.
It's eaten already. :D :T

OK the fun over chocolate is settled, But the chemical companies making this stuff I find is not a good thing although spare a thought for those type 2's who have no other option to keep BG's down to a happy medium as type 1's have insulins to remedy the carbs that they contain. OK they're are some low caber's too.
chemicals are not for me. ;)

Indeed, the theory may not be proven, yet. But, are you willing to subject yourself to the inferior flavor and zero satisfaction to be a guinea pig for the pharm industry? I am biological therefore I eat biological products. I don't drink gasoline, nor do I eat aspartame. You can east aspartame (gasoline) if you want - that is what choice is all about. However, I think it beneficial for friends to warn friends against doing stoopid things. I think aspartame is stoopid to do.

I've been drinking diet coke and using artificial sweeteners since I can remember. I'm not obese because of it. I don't have metabolic syndrome because of it. 28yrs of diabetes and so far no adverse effects from the sweeteners and I'd like to think I have better blood sugar control then I would have using "natural" sugars.

Just because its natural doesn't mean its good for you.

and.... , mice and humans are completely different animals. I don't much trust research that says something is bad/good for me based on how its bad/good for a mouse.

if you want to eat sugar and honey and "natural" sweeteners, more power to you. I like my little chemical packets. :)

isn't splenda made from sugar? I guess they add chemicals too it? What about stevia isn't that natural?

There are chemicals in everything, pretty much anything processed you are going to find something that isn't good for you it in.
