The weather is warm at +1c, the sun is out, there's no wind, and the roads are clear. I made the decision to hit the road. Of course I'm following a plan. I am soooo out of shape. I picked this one
Cool Running :: The Couch-to-5K Running Plan (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml)
I did day one ok. I definately felt it in my lungs and legs, but I got through it with little difficulty. One negative though. Near the end I noticed a streak in my eye :( Another frickin bleeder. It didn't last long, so hopefully it's just another little spitter, my third this winter. I suppose I'd better see the Grunter tomorrow. pffft!
Gonna track my weight as I do this and report in weekly. I need some motivation.

Me too John. I am going to give this a shot as soon as I return from vacation. Great article. It is time I got on my rollerblades (hope the feet are good with that decision).
Keep us updated on how you are doing. We are supposed to be in the high 60's next week. Finally!

Hey that's a good plan, I like the website you link too. It has me thinking about doing some sort of marathon.... maybe :)
I've been doing a lot of jogging and weight training this past year and I still remember when I first started out, I just wanted to push the stop button after a few minutes. I could barely do the treadmill for more than 10 minutes now, I'm on it for 45 min at a time everyday then another 45 or some sort of weight resistance training. Keep going it only gets better and after the first month you can really feel the difference in how you feel.

Sounds like a great plan John ~ good luck to you! A friend of mine joined a "learn to run" program through the local Leisure Center and it sounded just like the program that you're starting. She's very overweight and she was a little upset at first that she was always the last one of the group, but by the end of it, she couldn't believe how far she'd come! The next year she participated in the Vancouver Sun Run, which I think is 10K. :) Have fun!

John,
Sounds fun -- sorry about the eye thing. Geez. You'll also get to start reducing your basals with the extra activity, like you wouldn't know that! I was very active yesterday -- the 80% (or similar) temp basal the whole day probably would have worked well. Instead I went low about every 3 hours.

Couch to 5K or C25K is a good program to get you up and running.

I agree those are good programs, and they work, and they are smart.
Making the mistake of trying to get back into running too fast usually ends up in something bad happening unless you're under 20 and heal like Wolverine.
I did a program like this last year and it really worked.. In about 2-3 months I was running 3 miles pretty comfortably.
I am surprised it's that warm in NB, but that's great! Something like -15 in Toronto today, and ice and snow everywhere.

I did day 2 yesterday, a bit belated. I should say we as the wife joined in. She was away at the start of the week and did her first at her hotel.
We did it at our local university. Our daughter is there and we stopped to drop off something. They have a nice track except it wasn't cleared, so we hobbled around the campus. It was close to 6pm and it was icing up, but there was lots of traction sand down. It sits atop a big hill and is exposed to the West. **** it was cold running into the wind. Brrrrr!

Wind is the worst. About the only thing that makes me sometimes wish for a treadmill or a gym membership is the wind.
Are you thinking any of entering a 5K race in the future? They're fairly common and often used to help raise money for various charities. You might also find that doing a 5K race you'll be surprised by how much faster you can go when it's a race environment.

Right now I'm looking at building a habit and losing some weight. I may do the 'run for the cure' race, but racing has never been a lure. I really want to get in shape so I can play hockey again.

I tried the C25K program, but it seemed to hurt my ankles a lot. So, then I tried a good Body for Life Cardio routine. It is all walking, but it kicks my hiney.

Right on John! Running (or swimming, biking, etc) is the best drug in the world imho.

You have inspired me to get off the couch. I did day one without much difficulty.

Week 1 is in the books. We did day three on treadmills at my work. It was just too nasty out to run.
