Has anybody had the pleasure of pizza lows after testing BG of 5.5, taking rapid
(trying to figure out the carbs )
{my normal dose is 5u rapid and I took 8u }
then ate three slices ....and an hour and a half later tested fine at BG of 4-5. Two hours later and third hour BG was 14
I took two units to correct then was low at 2am ( 16u lantus at 10:pm but this may be besides the point)last night I'm trying a little less ( 12u lantus )
thought I'd mention BBQ chicken pizza 14 inch

Most T1's struggle with Pizza. The high fat content slows down the absorbsion of the bread. For this reason, if you bolus for the bread as usual and give the required amount, it is not uncommon to go low a couple of hours later and then have a nice prolonged high later on.
To overcome this, try giving some of the insulin up front and then give the rest after a couple of hours.

Are you trying to develop an insulin:carb ratio? Most of us would not say we had a normal dose of n units. We'd say we took n units for every 10 grams of carbs.
Same goes with corrections. For the sake of math, 10g of carbs translates to 2.8 mmol/l or 50 mg/dl. So if you took 1 unit to treat 10g of carbs, you would then take 1 unit to drop your BGs 2.8 mmol/l.
Pizza and Chinese are very difficult to guage as per what Gary said. Figure your ratios using measured slices of whole wheat bread, then get to work on the pizza timing.

Donovan,
It matters a lot how much fat is on that pizza. I go to a place in Trenton, NJ called DeLorenzos where they have very thin crust and very little cheese. Big difference from Pizza Hut or other deep dish types.
:D :D They also don't have a bathroom so I'm always in tight control when we go so I'm not in distress during the party.:D :D

I try to stay away from pizza at all costs even though I love it. I'll be fine for about an hour or so than all of a sudden, BAM!! I'm in the 200's and its a pain to correct because your BS goes down very slow. Than the roller coaster effect comes and my whole day is ruined. Pizza is like that pretty girl thats kind of dumb. You want your fun but know you'll be paying for it later, ha!!

Oddly enough, pizza is probably my BEST meal in terms of control. Well, that may be stretching it a bit, but I could eat 5, 6 slices and be in complete control. 7.3 units per slice, 3.5 units dual wave over 3 1/2 hours ; 0 up front / 100 % over the course of the 3 1/2 hours...hey, it works perfectly

I have the exact same problem with pizza.
I have totally cut it out of my diet since it is such a pain.
Has anyone experienced something similar with pasta,
where its slow absorption allows your BG to drop 30 minutes
to 1 hr 30 minutes after eating, but then it skyrockets
around the 2 1/2 -3 hour mark?
Also with fried, breaded foods like a chicken sandwich
or pork cutlet?

I love pizza, and i wont stop eating it :D
When i go for a pizza buffet at pizza hut, i tend to vary the pizza slices i eat (as you would at a buffet), I split my insulin in half and take some now, then some about 2 hours later. I very rarely go low or too high (never been over 10 after pizza) after pizza.
i find that works well for me, i do the same with large pasta dishes.

WOW
and I did it again last night PIZZA....13.7 but I left it and bg went to 11 by 11:30pm and woke with 6.7
I guess I should mention I've been SICK (cold,.sore throat )for the last five days.So I'm extreamly happy with these BGs:D
I AM going to try splitting my dose ...So add the carbs figure your dose and split it in half?,taking the balance 1...or 2 Hrs later??
RYAN no fat is good fat unless its un-saturated or monounsaturated
I expect these meals are only one-a-day and probably your supper meal??
Big fat and Big carbs on the same plate(MEAL) are your worst nightmare
