View Full Version : Anasthesia and Diabetes?

I will have a vitrectomy soon and I was wondering what side affects would anasthesia have and would they be affected by diabetes? Also has anyone here had a vitrectomy before and what type of anasthesia did you get and also what was the outcome?

Sorry to hear about your upcoming Vitrectomy.
I had eye surgery before, as well as a dozen other surgeries in my 38 years of T1. Anasthesia has never been a problem, just make sure the doctor perfoming it knows and tests your BG frequently and leaves your pump connected (!!).

I also have one scheduled in a few weeks and the only thing I have been told is I need to have a complete blood work done and an EKG.

ya im also having cataract at the same time since vitrectomy causes it. Do you need bloodwork? they never told me about that.

For all of the surgeries in my life, I've had anesthesia. Things are MUCH better these days!

My three Vitrectomies and my cateract surgery were all performed using a local anesthetic and a sedative. My pump kept my sugar normal (basal only) although they did test during the surgery. They also requested I start with a 150, which I did.

did ur vitrectomies remove all your floaters. thats all i really want, NO MORE FLOATERS THEY ARE RUINING MY LIFE!

You probably won't get an anesthesia, more like a strong sedative. You'll be in and out in no time for the floaters and cataracts. There's no carpet beating to do, just simple hoovering. I'm guessing 45 minutes. If your basals are fine, there should be no concern. I assume it's early in the morning when your DP is kicking in anyway.

Peej will be in OR an hour or so. Again there should be no issues. Be up front about your basals and your expectations. They will test you before going in and probably while in there. I had no preliminary bloodwork for mine; though I think they took some in pre-op. Bring a list of medications too.

You guys will be in the cafeteria getting a coffee before you realize what happenned.

Here's a quick before and after representing what I experienced. before with muck and after with a single floater. I think you'll be happy, at least for awhile. has he talked about why they are there and whether they will return?

yes it is just for floaters. I have hundreds of them and they are ruining my life. He said that they shouldn't return but of course if i do get more in the future i can do the surgery again... were your floaters really that bad or is that an exageration?

Actually it was much worse. You can't represent something like that accurately with Paint.

When do you guys go? Please PM me when you get out.

surgery is in late april. i have that many but they are not so thick. I really hope this works for me, it would definitly change my life.
