What are the common infusion sets for your pump?

What would you consider the most common sets for each pump? My question is for a very good cause... sorry it's long but hopefully worthwhile.

Here in Victoria Australia we have our supplies subsidized through a scheme. There are many outlets all around for diabetes supplies, eg, a participating chemist within 10 minutes - but not pump consumables. Those are mail order only. You can be waiting up to 14 days and there is no option for prioritised post. As is happening to me right now it is very stressful with a 7 - 14 day wait and through losing some sets I am down to my last 2. Obviously, the hospital may be the only recourse if they do not arrive sooner than later.

Anyway, long story short, I was talking to my local supply outlet and they are keen to get pump consumables for over the counter. They will need to negotiate this with the scheme - no idea on the chances, politics, etc. But there is one thing I wanted to help with, to help realize that a reasonable range could be achieved to help many pumpers without stocking the 90 or so you can mail order. (impossible in a chemist, eh?). As people with not much experience with the pump and requirements the order form would seem very daunting.

If this goes further of course the stockists, educators etc would sort out the most common sets. But I want to give them a demo shortlist to start thinking about, it is important to make this seem more manageable, to increase chances of following this idea through!

So I'd appreciate any reasonable suggestions for what are the most common sets for the pumps you know. The pumps listed are

For the paradigm it's my very hazy impression that many people are started, and stay, on the Quickset. So a couple lengths of that and maybe the Sillhouette as well might be a good starting point. Would you agree?

I'm sure there are variations in different markets so your experience may not correlate exactly... not to worry, it's a very rough example list! Just some basics to throw together to show it may be achievable.

I love the quicksets for my paradigm. Never tries sils - hated sof-sets. The sets come with different tubing lengths and different needle lengths. I'd guess stocking the longer tubes would be smarter but you'd need both needle lengths.

Wouldn't this info be easily obtained from the manufacturers? Seems like they'd be silly not to be seen helping promote their "big sellers".

Subby, all of those pumps take the same sets except the Dana and the Paradigm. They use proprietary sets. Every other pump uses luer lock.

I use silhouettes and love them.

To answer your question, absolutely the manufacturers would be the right source (actually, the supply scheme people would have exact numbers). The problem is, getting it to the point where it is researched properly - suppliers contacted, etc etc. That's where this list comes in, to help see it may be viable, and go to the next stage of going ahead with it.

I don't know how friendly the supply scheme people are - if they say "can't be done, too much to stockl" I want the chemist to be able to say "hang on, I've seen a reasonable list for the most popular, it's doable." I may shoot off some emails to the manufacturers but I would not be hopeful of something quick (I want to drop this list in the next couple of days).

Thanks for the info Funnygrl. I am about to try the silhouettes myself. Sadly there are no sure-Ts here, I have heard good things about them too.

Each of those Luer lock pumps seem to have their own brand of sets. Is it reasonable to assume most people's sets would be the same brand as the pump, eg Animas pump = animus comfort? Or are there "market leaders" so you might get a Cozmo but be encouraged to go on for example the luer lock quicksets?

Just trying to get a handle on the market dynamics and pumpers expectations... This list would have to tow the line between "generic emergency available" and "hey they've got the most common sets for each of the pumps".

Honestly, there's really not as many infusion sets out there as you might think. They're just marketed under different brands and names.

Let's look at the Silhouette for example. It's Medtronic's Silhouette, but the same exact set is marketed as the Comfort by Animas and Cozmo (same thing, different label slapped in the distributer box), and it's sold as the Tender by Accu-Chek. They're all made by Unomedical.

Then there's the Sure-T, which is the Rapid by Accu-Chek or the Contact by Animas. Also made by Unomedical.

Etc, etc. The Quick-set and the Soft Sets are really only sold by Medtronic, but come in Paradigm connection or Luer Lock.

The Inset is really only sold by Animas.

The Cleo is really only sold by Smiths.

Other than that, they're all the same.

I order from Liberty, a third party vendor, so I can get whatever sets I want. I really didn't like Sure-Ts at all.

Awesome information. Thank you, that really simplifies things. That makes it much easier to cover the bases without needing a warehouse out the back.

Just to make something a bit clearer... here in Australia consumables are not covered under health insurance. That is why we all need to get it through the supply scheme, or pay full price. So we really only have one vendor... and no chance or choice of quick delivery (in Victoria anyway). So it would be a real relief if this outlet gets up and running.

I thought Unomedical made the Insets. Is Unomedical a Johnson and Johnson company?

I've used the Insets for two years and have never purchased them from Animas. They will work with any reservoir that uses a luer lock (non-proprietary). I think they are a great infusion set, BTW...
