If alcohol brings down our blood sugars what do you think about having a shot of whiskey at bedtime to bring down our morning numbers.

I am curious to hear your thoughts.

Try it and see what happens. I have found that I need a lot more alcohol than that to make any difference, so I don't bother. But you may be more lucky ;) . Also consider the long term health implications of an extra 7 shots of alcohol a week.

Schelp,

What meds are you taking? I have heard that alcohol may help the morning numbers, and I have found that sometimes after having a couple of glasses of wine that my numbers are sometimes better the following morning. I generally avoid drinking during the week, as I drive first thing in the morning and don't want to have any alcohol in my blood stream.

People have also suggested eating some protien before bed as it can help. Have you tried varying the time of your last meal of the day. I have now found that eating somewhere between 8-9pm helps my morning numbers as opposed to eating at 6-7pm.

****, I guess I will have to volunteer for this medical study. It's a dirty job but some one has to do it. Who's got the whiskey?

Vodka, I'm on my way!

Do you make vodka jello shots too?

Wine is fine
But whiskey's quicker
Suicide is slow with liqueur
Take a bottle drain your sorrows
Candied thoughts await tommorows...

Wouldn't it be far simpler to just take more insulin? ***ducks to avoid rocks thrown by other forum members...***

For me, my only high number is my morning one. My before meals are good, so are my after... so if I adjusted either bolus or basal, then I'd have to eat more and that's not a great idea...

Besides, I do like vodka http://www.getsmile.com/emoticons/funny-smileys-68129/champagne.gif

I'm not convinced alcohol will do much for morning BGs. One ounce will cut roughly one hour of basal secretion, at most. You are also adding sugar. They offset each other. The net is a timing difference: a small spike followe by a small dip. You may then trigger a nighttime low and a liver dump. I'm just not convinced.

btw I have a packet of sugar free grape crystals. Let's have a purple Jesus party! Urban Dictionary: Purple Jesus (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Purple+Jesus)

There is NO glucose, sugar or carb in alcohol per se. Beer has carbs (from the stuff that makes it beer not watery alcohol), and wine will have a varying amount depending on how dry it is. Otherwise, it's only the mixer you've got to watch (for carbs, you're on your own as far as the alcohol goes).

But further research is needed to come to a definite conclusion.

The nice thing about this is if you do it while your doctor is at the bar you will be doing it under "medical supervision":)
