I'm having a little problem with snacking, and I need some tips or advice on how to deal with it.

During the weekend or other days off, I can go all day with only eating once or twice. If I'm at work, I can't seem to go more than 10 minutes without having a nibble of something :( I'm pretty sure that it's emotional eating, rather than true hunger, seeing as it doesn't happen when I'm not in the office. The problem I'm having is that, when your insulin to carb ratio is 1:15 or 1;20, it's hard to bolus for every little morsel, and I end up running higher than I would like.

So, any suggestions for keeping the "munchie monster" at bay? Thanks!

There is a couple of things you can try Becky. I am a "boredom" snacker also. Try this.... have sugar free mints or tic tacs by you when you feel like snacking. Brush your teeth. You will not want to snack if you have just brushed your teeth. Chew gum (politely of course) . You won't snack if you have gum in your mouth. If non of these tricks work for you, keep tabs on what you are eating. Every time you snack on something, write it down. Keep the snack list on your desk so you can write every single thing you eat down on a piece of paper. At the end of the day make a pile of those foods on your desk. It will shock you into eating less.

Thanks for the ideas, Nancy! I like the idea of the "shock therapy" :D

Hi Becky. :) I tend to want to snack when I am bored or have a big hassle to work out. My dentist isn't crazy about it, but I chew ice. Generally I do that all day when I am not doing something to occupy my hands. I have been chewing on celery in the evenings. I still crave snacks, even give in once in awhile, but this helps.

I like my snacks too! I try to avoid the "picking" and go ahead and eat a real snack...say 15 carb grams of something...it is easier for me to aim for 15-30 grams and take 1-2 units to cover than to ignore the tiny amounts...then watch them sneak up on your numbers.

But to be honest, I've had some jobs and days at home where those small bites here & there, have helped me maintain numbers when I am running low and have a lot of "motion" work ahead of me.

When I was moving into my house and running room-to-room, up/down stairs...those small bites here and there really came to my aid...so I guess they work both ways.

Main thing, I try to avoid snacks that contain fat.

Baby carrots do the trick for me. In high snack mode, I can go through a bag every few days.

Keep cold bottled water on your desk at all times. Sometimes just having something to reach for and put in your mouth will satisfy that nervous habit! You might try taking some healthier snacks as well ... like sliced apples with a bit of peanut butter to dip them in! Maybe you can even "schedule" little snack breaks throughout your day. That will give you something to look forward to every hour or so. Good luck!

it's hard to bolus for every little morsel,

But if you did "bolus for every little morsel", a half unit if need be, the problem would be solved one way or the other.

The best is to try to not snack but the cool thing about a pump is you can bolus for those little snacks. I found it very hard to inject .5 units or smaller when I was on MDI. With the pump you just punch in the numbers and let it pump. I have put in 5 to 10 carbs many times into the pump. It might only be .3 to .5 units but it covers the small snack.

I have a weakness for any snacks I can see when I am at work I am on the road mostly so I don't have food at my disposal unless I stop. So I do pretty good while working but at home if snacks are sitting around I have problems resisting
