While your day is ending, mine is only starting, but like upnorth I've been a bold boy and skipped breakfast, my reason, I was a bold boy last night and had a really nice chinese take away (still watched what I had) as I was celebrating having lost 45.5 pounds. Lunch will be a cup of soup and slice of wholemeall bread. Dinner I think will be a stir fry.

My staples are, either an egg OR two small slices of wholemeal bread toasted for breakfast, Cup of soup+wholemeal bread OR two small slices of wholemeal bread+ 2 slices of ham for lunch, I find a small piece of cheese, hot-dog frankfurter are good snacks. Dinners, lots of chicken, meat, veg, garlic, onions, I do a lot of stir frys and spicy meals as I love spicy food and it's filling.

Are you testing alot to find what works for you?

Hi George,

A healthy diet for diabetes depends upon who you listen to and what works for you. I would also argue it is different for a T1 and a T2. T1's can 'cover' carbohydrate with an insulin injection which T2's cannot. If you are a T1 who does not suffer from insulin resistance, the diet is not really restricted at all. Sure, avoid eating a ton of sugar but generally you can eat most things.

Personally, I eat what would be considered a fairly healthy diet for someone without diabetes. In other words, I get about 50% of my calories from carbohydrates. I try and make most of these carbs complex ones (so anything brown is good :) ) and I then ensure I cover these carbs with the right amount of insulin. If you carb count effectively and match the food to the insulin, you can eat pretty much 'normally' if there is such a thing. What you cannot get away with is deciding you want a pint of orange juice in a pub because you feel like it and not inject to cover. But as long as you are sensible and test often, pretty much anything goes.

Some foods affect different people badly. Some here cannot tollerate mashed potatoes or large quantities of pasta. I'm fine with both. You just need to experiment. Most people have trouble with pizza and Chinese food; both tend to send you a little bit high straight away followed by low then followed by high again. You can do a dual bolus for these kind of foods (read up in the carbs forum on here for how to do this).

Some people here eat low carb; many are T2 (for whom reducing carbs is certainly effective) but some are type 1. The problem is that if you reduce carbs, you obviously have to get the calories from somewhere and so you naturally have to eat more fat and / or protein. Some people are happy to do this and enjoy eating this way. Personally, I prefer my own diet as I love fruit, potatoes, bread etc. If you look hard enough you can find supporting theories to both ways of doing it. The diet I follow is more mainstream, the low carb for T1's is outside the mainstream (IMO) due to the higher fat content that many nutritionists working on today's thinking would tell you is not good. Not ragging on low carbing, just telling it as I see it. It certainly suits some people very well but it's not a road I would choose at this stage. As my body constantly changes, I would certainly consider it if I could no longer cover my carbs effectively with insulin. I hope that day doesn't come as life without decent bread would not be nice as far as I'm concerned ;)

For breakfast I eat three eggs with two slices of bread(multi grain and as low carb as I can find) topped with no sugar added peanut butter and no sugar-added jelly.

Lunch I eat left overs - same as I ate at dinner.

Dinner beef or chicken with green veggies i.e. green beans, or salad aspargus. meatsauce and multigrain pasta brown rice.

For snacks I either eat low carb Ice cream or no sugar added ice cream, and nuts of all kinds. If I have a drink I stick to red wine, low carb beer or shot of Jose Ceurvo, :D

I will not up pizza or soft serve Ice cream- the stands are starting to open for summer
