I decided, being a chocoholic, that after 6 weeks of abstinence, I needed a chocolate fix. I substituted my normal carb intake for my evening meal with 4 squares of a Hershey bar. It was heaven, but surprisingly, I was satisfied with only that small amount. I felt guilty about it afterwards, but my BG didn't suffer. I guess that if I do it on occasion with the amount of carbs kept in check, it wouldn't be too bad........

I find that if I look at carb content I can actually find some chocolates even at walmart that are easily within my snack level. Some mainline bars are fairly high so you need to watch that. But some of the smaller speciality ones they have in boxes on the shelves are made with up to 80 coco and have maybe 12 carbs or so for a four square serving size. I eat two or one and keep it to a minimum, but don't feel like I can't have any. Another one my mom ran into there is in the cooking section. It is a Nestles dark chocolate bar with solid break off bars that are about 8 carbs a piece. If you nibble on those they are good too. Just watch the label.

I reckon we all need a treat every now and then to help keep us on the straight and narrow. I have found that I can tolerate Grean & Black's Organic Dark Chocolate (70%) very well. It seems to be available in Texas, check out Welcome to Green and Black's Organic Chocolate (http://www.greenandblacks.com/home.html)

I LOVE chocolate, esp. dark chocolate. I keep a bag of Dove Dark Chocolate in the freezer and when the urge hits, i'll have 2-3 pieces. This doesn't seem to bother my blood sugars. I also like the Lindt dark chocolate bars.
A friend introduced me to "See's Chocolates" and their s/f dark chocolate bars and S/F peanut brittle are WONDERFUL!

I keep a bag of hershey's kisses around, and I allow myself to have one after lunch and one after dinner(okay, sometimes two :D )...this has kept my chocolate addiction under control for quite a few years now.
I do a lot better having a small amount of something than not allowing myself to have it at all.

You know, I have found that after going this long without desserts and such, that I don't really miss them ... much! Then if I do have the option of having a bit, the guilt is far worse than the moment of pleasure I got from them. Now, put a piece of cheesecake in front of me and that theory may be blown to pieces! LOL!

I buy a bag of the Russell Stover's Single Source Chocolates, with 60 percent cacao. A serving size is three squares with 21 carbs, but I eat only one, so that's just 7 carbs. And for dark chocolate, one is really all I want. It keeps the chocolate beastie at bay, which is good, because I have a monster sweet tooth.
I did go to Ryan's for supper last night and ate two of their sugar-free cookies. I checked my sugar after we had walked (it was about 2 hours after I'd eaten) and it was down to 92! Woo-hoo! So that was good. The cookies were tasty, too, especially with a cup of decaf that tasted surprisingly good.
But yeah, I gots to have my chocolate once in a while.

I have discovered that an entire Hersey's King Size Chocolate bar is 42 grams carbohydrates, 14 squares per bar. That makes each square only 3 grams and if I let it slowly melt in my mouth, it really takes the edge off.

I love Hershey's extra dark mint squares. I can make one of these last almost 30 minutes by not chewing-just letting little nibbles dissolve on my tongue. One piece has only about 5 grams of carbs. I have found that I truly enjoy it much more that way than when I gobble it down in 5 seconds!! Also, because it's dark I know it has some health benefits.

One of the things that made me miserable at diagnosis was the thought of never having chocolate again. So now I use it as reward :) I lost another 2lbs this week and got my first ever reading of 4.2 so I allowed myself one square of s/f dark chocolate. I nibbled it really slowly and it was definately a moment to savour! :D

Sorbee makes a sugar free chocolate(flavored) bar that is quite tasty. I am a chocoholic as well and these have quenched my cravings so far.
