Has anyone used symlin just to lose weight? I'm type 1 and have heard this medication helps with after-meal highs, but also has a side affect of weight loss. I don't have bad control of after-meal highs, just wanting to lose weight. I've tried all ways to lose weight and its just not coming off.
Thanks.

i use symlin, not specifically for that reason though...
i think the weight loss comes from two simple reasons... symlin decreases appetite (significantly with me), and it also descreases amount of insulin needed.
there may be more to it, someone else may chime in.

I used Symlin for awhile but recently stopped. I only lost 2-3 pounds while using it.
It's work just like Scott said, it decreases appetite and decreases the insulin you use. So basically you don't feel like eating so your calories are cut and you lose weight.
Have you just tried cutting your calories?

I tried it and it really did not do much for me BG or weight wise. My appetite was not supressed enough for my liking. I feel the insuling makes me hungry. So I switched to Byetta, even though it's not for a type 1. It really slows the after meal spike and makes me not want to eat! For me the less I eat the better my BGs are the less I weigh! I'm not a big food person so it doens't bother me.
Hope the Symlin works better for you!

Thanks for the responses. I just started using symlin today and adjusted my insulin:carb ratio. Hopefully I will see some results along with decreasing calories. Thanks again.

Good luck. As a type 2 diabetic, I have used Symlin since early January 2008. My doctor prescribed it primarilly to see if it would help me to lose weight (in conjunction with my insulin and other medications).
For me, it works quite well. I feel like it has helped me better regulate my post-meal blood sugar levels. The only negative side affect is some mild nausea.
I've lost 27 pounds since going on symlin. To an extent this is due to the symlin in that I now have the ability to control my appetite and stick with the weightwatchers program I started in January. I've gone down from 295.8 pounds to 268.8 pounds.
It hasn't been easy to stick with my weight loss program. But I feel like the Symlin helped tip me into the success column. Before I went on symlin, I only gained weight.
My doctor just did a full blood work and evaluation. He's happy with where my numbers are and he is thrilled that I've finally started losing weight.
For me, it seems to be the right thing. I note others have had different results.
