I've had this lovely disease for about 3-4 years now and all of a sudden nothing makes sense...I'm testing upmteen times a day...correcting like crazy and still nothing is working. Even protien now sends me through the roof. They are trying to work out a better ratio for me but so far we're not right. Is this the normal progression of things or is this something else? If it's normal how do re-figure out how much insulin to take....I look like a pin cusion right now...I feel like one poke to many and I'm going to fall off the earth. I don't mind all the needles and whatnot...when they work, but all this and I'm still high as a kite is very frustrating! If anyone has any advise I'd love it...if not, then thanks for listening to a rant.

Liz,

Have you talked with your endo about a pump? Also, what are you taking for insulin resistance?

Hi Liz! How long has this been going on? I do not take insulin, but I have learned a lot about it reading here. Less than two weeks it maybe temporary due to a bug or the moons of Saturn. More than two weeks time to get back to basics and refigure your basel dose. After that's figured it should be easier to figure you bolus ratio.

The 64 million dollar question (inflation!)

It sounds like you've progressed a bit further. You probably need an uppage right accross the board.

Basal are very key. When they cover near perfectly, the other ratios are very easy to find. For many of us, basals are a nightmare. Generally we use the morning fasting number to judge them, but basal testing adds another new and important level of knowledge. We (IDDs) should all know our basal patterns intimately. Ask "them" about it.

Here's some reading. Getting Down to Basals :: Diabetes Self-Management (http://www.diabetesselfmanagement.com/articles/Insulin/Getting_Down_to_Basals)

Thanks John, I have had a quick read of this and I will have a look at the 3AM test and see that the Lantus is in fine form.
I cannot wait to get off the Lantus and get into the Levemir. :)

I don't use insulin so I can't help you there. Just wanted you to know that I hope you can get this straightened out. Please "rant" here any time you need! We're all here for eachother! ;)

Doing corrections like crazy can really throw everything off. You need to start from scratch. Get your morning numbers right at first. When you wake up test. If you are high in the morning you need to increase your basal rate dose by a small amount. When you get your morning numbers corrected move to your breakfast postprandial number. Once you correct that, you move on to your lunch numbers. If you are jumping all over the place and chasing highs and lows, it will be a frustrating battle.

I'm up to 45 units of levemir at night and 35 inthe day and my morning numbers continue to rise....it bothers me to be taking that much at night....I never used to have to take this much...it's been going on now for about 6 months...my endo said to go to a 1-10 ratio for mornings but still that doesn't really work...if I have to go 1-1 I think I'll go insane....it's a mind thing....I hate the thaught of taking that much insulin....it's a mind game right? I just refuse to believe that I need that much and why now? Anyways...I still can't get my nights/dawn down so I'm starting the day already in a fight....it's very frusterating. This is also complicated by a busy work schedual....I can't sit at home and tinker with it all day. Anyways, thanks for listening.

It sounds like there has been a sudden change. Could you have a bad vial of Levemir or Novorapid? Or maybe changing to Lantus would give you a better a result.

Been going on for 6 months. Heard of people switching insulins in this type of situation and having it turn around. So it sounds like a viable option to me.

was on lantus before levemir...it burned like crazy, made me hungry 24/7, and left bruises like you wouldn't believe. I wouldn't want to return to that if it was absolutely neccesary. It seems that even the novorapid isn't working like it should. I work out the carbs...take the "right" amount of insulin and 2 hours later I'm high as a kite. Even protien (ie: a peice of steak) by itself (which never used to be a problem) sends me high....it's like everything has gone to pot. I also just got new levemir and no difference so I son't think it was a bad batch. It makes me want to stop testing cuase I just don't want the constant bad news. I don't know. I go back to the endo in may....maybe she'll have some ideas. Unitl then it's just injecting copious amounts of insulin and hoping it works

Liz, How much do you weigh and what are the doses?
