Hey guys.. I'm so glad I finally found somewhere to go to get more information on my type 1 diabetes. My name is Mandi, I'm 25, and have had type 1 diabetes for 18 years. My blood sugars have been out of control for the past couple of years. I need help getting back on track, I can't stop eating the sweets.. Any advice is greatly appreciated. :)

Hello and welcome, Mandi! It's a pleasure to meet you, although I wish it could be under different circumstances. I'm T1 myself for 13 years, currently on MDI. What insulins are you currently on? I'm sure you'll find lots of friendly support and information here that will help you get control of your life back. You'll most likely make some new friends here as well. Please feel comfortable asking any questions and/or sharing your experiences. Just wade on in when you're ready!

Hope to see you around often,
HeatherP

Hello Mandi,

Welcome to the forums. You will get lots of support here.

It sounds like some bad eating habits have beome entrenched in your psyche. But it also sounds like you want to change them and take control of your diabetes.

My advice to you is to have a few sessions with a hypnotist. If you really want to change those eating habits, a hypnotist will help reprogram your mind and get you onto the right track.

If that sounds too "off the wall" for you and you want to do some research first, have a look here :

How Hypnosis Works (http://www.howstuffworks.com/hypnosis.htm)

I've been reading a bit about the liver's effect on diabeties, and the liver "helping itself" and "being invited to a party." My doc. never said anything to me about the liver's effect on my diabeties.

Can someone elaborate, or point me to a diff. thread?

Thanks!!

Well, I'm not sure if I'm telling you what you're looking for, but the liver stores glucose for your body for emergencies. When you go low, your liver will release the glucose it's stored to bring your b/s back up. Sometimes when you have an extreme low, the liver has released all the glucose (I think it's actually called glycogen) this leaves you vulnerable to more lows until the liver can store up some more.

The liver is able to repair/regenerate itself. It is one of the few organs that can do this.

Does that help you?

Mandi,

Read the blurb and look at the diagram on this page (http://health.howstuffworks.com/diabetes1.htm) to see how the liver gets involved in the synthesis of glycogen and then breaking it down into glucose. The process has a major effect on you blood sugars and can be be very confusing. So it is worth understanding how it works.

Cheers,

Mark

Welcome Mandi. You will get lots of support and advice from this group. Spend a couple days (we are a talkative bunch) reading some of the threads and jump in with your knowledge and experience. It is great that you found this place and there is tons, tons of support here. Seems like your on the right track knowing that you need to get back on track. Good luck and WELCOME

welcome, Mandi! :)

I think it's great that you want to get back on track  . I think it is a big step to realize this and to want to make changes. The best changes are slow and gradual, b/c they are more likely to be permanent changes. Nothing happens overnight. Expecting overnight changes, is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

I think working with your CDE, dietician, and Endo can really help you. They should be able to help you make a plan and help motivate you to take the next step. Coming to the forum or participating in other support groups is another way for you to educate yourself, ask questions, vent, seek support, or just come socialize. I don't think you can ever learn too much about something. I realize that you have had Diabetes for a while, and I'm sure you do know a lot from experience, but I'm sure there are some things you still haven't learned. The better educated you are, the better off you are. So if you have any questions or comments, please do feel free to come here and post anytime.

Welcome again! :)

I like sweets too. I probably will be told I'm wrong for doing this but when I crave sweets, I'll eat things like apples, peaches, raisins, watermelon, and carrots. While they do have natural sugars, I'm hoping they aren't as bad as things like candy.

Hi! My name is Nancy. My son's name is Thomas. He was diagnosed 1 week before his 10th birthday, September 24th, 2003. I am glad to have found this forum. We have learned a lot but still have so many more questions. He started using a pump in December, 2003 and is doing pretty good.
