Hey guys im Rob, 16 year old kid from Australia. i got type 1 diabetes in 2006 which made my teenage years ALOT harder,
Especially because i skateboard almost everyday, which means my Blood sugar level is always going really low, or high, etc.. I am lucky to have a mother who also has type 1 so i have someone to relate too.

but i have No friends with diabetes or know anythign about diabetes, which makes **** hard for me at times.
i came on here because i want to talk to other people out there with type one, people i can relate too.

Hey Rob, welcome to DF.

I'm Kit (Katie), I've been t1 since I was 8, and live in Melbourne. I'm 24 now. I won't hold being a crow eater against you, as long as you don't barrack for the crows... or Power...

What insulins do you take? I see in your profile that you're often above 20??? not good for the long term... or the short!!

haha yeah my BSl is always high, because as a kid i like choclate and foods with a lot of carbs etc.. i cant help myself but later i think bout how i can get really sick when im older, i gotta get my act together.

i have 16 units of levimir in the morning, and 20 at night. and i have 'novorapid (fast acting) during the day when needed.
another reason my BSL is high is because i dont like having insulin at school, i feel intimidated, but i just go to the toilet and do it and stuff everynow and then.

im stoked i finnally can talk too other type 1 people from aus, haha!

Whoa, I'm guessing you don't count carbs then??

I just had a decent (ok, huge) slice of leftover birthday cake, but I know that I took the right amount of insulin for it... you can eat virtually anything you want without too much worry if you are counting your carbs right...

As for avoiding taking your shots at school... are you using a novopen? Its nice and subtle... I used to carry mine in my pocket or pencil case, and just shoot through my school dress or shirt... People will barely notice, and you will feel a million times better when you have some better control!!!

Rob,

There are lots of people from Aus on the forum, they keep going on about vegimite!

It's good to see that you know what you need to do to take control of your diabetes so as to avoid the nasty things when you are older.

Hi Rob,

Welcome to the forum. I chuckled at your signature. Having type 1 pretty much sucks at any age, but I do particularly remember 16 being not-so-sweet.

I'm thinking it would be good to have a pump. As long as you don't land on it too hard when you crash, it should really make your life easier and your control better. There should be a way to get your tester down to a mini so that the whole kit will fit in your pocket. That way, you can count carbs and know exactly how to correct. At 16, I was injecting in private too. I still do test under the table so as to not affect the weak-stomached in public places. With a pump, your correction doses can be blatant. So much more convenient and your friends will get used to your hi-tech gadget quickly.

I bet your mom knows this already--she's probably a fountain of advice, like all of us moms.

I'm glad you found us.

Welcome. I was Dxed at 14 too.

There's lots to learn, but thankfully it's not too hard, at least the management side isn't. If you ever have to face the complications side, that gets over our heads in a hurry.

Focus on your basals to start with. That's the foundation of good control. Meal boluses are almost too easy once you understand your basal profile.

I'm so glad you came along -- your youth shines through and it perks me up! I was 18 when I got type 1, which was an extremely rebellious time and I didn't do a lot of good for myself the first couple years. Thankfully, the body can help you out a little when you won't help it enough. But the sooner you take good care of yourself, the better. And it gets to be a habit to want to do well.

I love the Aussies on here! I would like Vegemite I'm sure!!

Rob, I have been diabetic with type one since I was around 8 yearsold and things were fine for me.... until I hit my teenage years and then I wanted to do what I want when I wanted, and that included eating sweets... Are you taking injections or are you on a pump?? I had a male friend in college who got on the pump bc he was very active in sports, it seemed to help a lot with him not having as many lows... Jess

hey Rob welcome aboard
I see Kit has managed to find you, she knows her stuff. She's my unofficial lil sister and a great laugh (and pretty cute too).
If you are using a Novopen then you can inject straight thru your t-shirt or even jeans i do and have done for years. I once got arrested for injecting in my town centre and spent a few hours residing at Her Majestys pleasure until the stupid prat who locked me up decided that he should perhaps ask me why i was injecting in the street. I told him i was diabetic and that it wasn't against the law and that if he didn't let me out i'd sue for a very hefty sum, he then let me go pretty fast. Having to inject does not mean that you should be banished to the toilet, just do it where you are and if someone complains just tell them politely that you are a diabetic.

Whats up man? I'm also 16 and very active. I play basketball and usually go pretty hard. I find that I can stay in great control with the pump, as you can cut way back on insulin or disconnect altogether when playing. Either way, developing a routine when excercising/playing is important.

Hey hello rob, Welcome to the DF forums and I see that Kit has found you and a nice chick too. :D I see that your mom is a type 1 too. Well you have come to the right place where fellow diabetics help each other and share a laugh every now and then. Do you have something with you when you go and skate board as this is a healthy activity and good on ya!

but i have No friends with diabetes or know anythign about diabetes, which makes **** hard for me at times.

Yeah, That dose suck not having friends who don't understand our disease. Kit has started a thread about food Nazis (http://www.diabetesforums.com/forum/chit-chat/16828-a-guide-to-dealing.html)so click the link and enjoy on what we think about non diabetics.

Anyway Rob & enjoy your skateboard. :D

Yes Rob, You can achieve this as you do need more insulin for the foods that you love! :D As for chocolate though, Take some before you go on your skateboard as the activity will burn off the chocolate that you have just ate. ;)

i have 16 units of levimir in the morning, and 20 at night. and i have 'novorapid (fast acting) during the day when needed.

The fast acting is something that you have before you eat and test test test as we do, Or at least I do of 10 - 15 times a day!!
im stoked i finnally can talk too other type 1 people from aus, haha!

Focus on your basals to start with. That's the foundation of good control. Meal boluses are almost too easy once you understand your basal profile.
