I have started treating myself occasionally with a bit of buttered microwave popcorn. The calories are surprisingly low and it doesn't seem to affect my BG. What about everyone else?

I've found popcorn to be a good snack, as far carbs and BG nimbers go; but I never really enjoyed the taste of popcorn enough to make it a snack outside the movie theater.

I usually get a small popcorn at the movies with a diet coke. Do they use "real butter" or is it some kind of synthetic butter? I just don't need the calories...but it might be nice to have a buttered popcorn sometime before I die.

I can't stand the smell of micro-wave popcorn in my house. It's sickening to me...I'm going to put a microwave in my garage so my hubby can fix his own. Yuck.

I agree... microwave popcorn stinks. I use a hot air corn popper that produces only a light aroma and creates fat free popcorn (until you cover it with butter).

The smell of it in the microwave doesn't bother but the smell of the bag or bowls the next day is sickening!!!

I buy the 100 calorie individual-sized bags of microwave popcorn and have had no problem with them. I also by the Harry & David popcorn seasonings, they have sour cream/onion, garlic, cheddar/jalapeno flavors that are quite good, you just sprinkle it on after popping.

The hot air popper is the way to go. You can then add all sorts of things to the finished bowl: cheese powder, cinnamon, butter, salt, cayenne pepper... use your imagination.
My dog used to vibrate when the popper came out cause she knew there'd be cast off. Alas, my ex got the popper, but I got the dog. Much better deal for me I think. ;)

sounds like you did get the better end of the deal...i had an old dog that would beg for popcorn...the spit out any pieces with out butter on them...it was pretty funny as she would get a little pile she wouldn't eat....

I love popcorn. I have this:

in my living room. ;)

I don't really count in the "does it raise your blood sugar" question/game. It used to. I ate it anyway and bolused to cover the carbs.

Now I just eat it.

Susan,
Yeah I got the better deal but I wish my dog was just a LITTLE more particular with what she'll eat. I have to keep her in front when we are in the woods so I can watch her every minute. Gross, gross, gross. Thank goodness she's not a licker. :D
Mike

Sorry for the departure, back to popcorn now...

I love popcorn also, but it doesn't like me. If I eat even a little, my blood sugar skyrockets and then I chase highs the rest of the day. I have tried dual and square wave boluses and so far haven't found that magic number.

I can eat a small serving of popcorn with just a small BS problem. When we go on trips, I pop enough for several small servings and put it in treat bags that I got cheap at Halloween. I staple them shut and it stays pretty fresh. They are just the right size when I get the "munchies" in the car, or late at night in the hotel. Usually when we are traveling, I walk much more and do not snack as much, so can handle the extra carbs. They are also a nice size for the grandkids.

Oh I love it. I eat popcorn almost everyday. I havent noticed any spikes in BS after eating it either.:)

Kim,

Thanks for posting this, I used to use popcorn as a standby for a night snack cause it is relatively low calorie, but haven't tried it since DX. I prefer to make it on the stove, used to add no butter but lots of salt, at this stage reckon I can live without the salt.

Next time the nibbles strike, I think I'll give popcorn a go.

Dave, I am so relieved to see that others think it is an "ok" snack! It's nice for us to be able to enjoy something as a snack that is "normal"! ;)

We are normal, it's all those sugar eating, chocolate munching, carb consuming people that are weird! But I'll happily try one of "their" snacks. :D

Reading some of the other replies to this post, it reinforces how our diabetes affects us differently. My normal Sunday eve "supper" consists of 3/4 cup of popcorn kernels (43 Carbs) cooked over about 1-2 TBSP of regular (prefer the taste of regular vs light or virgin) olive oil, plus 40 add'l carbs, plus a light beer. This is a total of 90 carbs, and with my 1:10 Humalog I:C Ratio, I should be bolusing with 9 units if BG in target range, but I've found I have to reduce that bolus by 15%. Most of the above comments reflected that popcorn causes their BG to rise rapidly and excessively. I have enough other foods that cause that reaction in me -- glad popcorn doesn't.

I love popcorn, and pre-pumping used to eat it probably more freely than was good for me :D ; I excused it as a slow-absorbing fiber :D :D . With pump, I have a frustrating carb-counting question: How do you calculate home-popped popcorn? I buy my kernels from the bulk bin at my local food coop, so I don't have a commercial label to go by. Help!

Theater popcorn usually doesn't use real butter. It uses a mixture of oils but mainly Palm Oil, which gives the "theater popcorn smell". It is also number one bad for the heart. I love it.

Apparently this site will not let me input the web site, but it's one provided by USDA. This is one of various carb-counting sites (Calorie King also has a good site)to determine the serving quantity or carb value of most "regular" foods. You just have to measure or weigh the amount of product and multiply that by the carb value to get the total carbs for the portion you measured.

Popcorn is one of the very few things I can pig put on except for protiens.
For some reason it has almost no effect on me.
I can eat a whole bag of the microwave stuff before I go to bed and in the morning my BS is where it usually is.
I don't do it often but sometimes there's that craving.
Always at the movies,always

Popcorn works very well for me. It's both filling and easy on my BGs. If I eat a lot, I usually have to give an extended bolus as it can raise my BGs quite a few hours later. Popcorn and beer are a perfect combo for me! The beer drops me lower later.

Thanks. I've tried Calorie King but frequently find it frustrating, because it'll say things like "one serving" or "one bowl"--nothing I can calculate with. So I've generally put it aside. I'll be checking out the USDA one.

Many theaters use coconut oil. Its cheep and works well in commercial poppers. Not all theaters use coconut oil tho. some use soybean, sunflower, or peanut oils, so if you're allergic to any of them make sure you ask what they use.

I rent out commercial poppers and we usually send out sunflower oil with ours and we always ask about food allergies first. Most people are surprised when we ask, but tis good business to not send your customers to the er imo. :)
