I need to lose weight (100lbs would be good) and my family doctor has suggested the Simply For Life approach. Does anyone have any experience with this and can you offer any advice? From what I have read they provide a weekly session with a "consultant" which may help me to keep on track but I am not sure what qualifications the consultants have, nor do I see any pricing on their website; which has me a little concerned.
Thanks :)

Frank,
Never heard of "Simply for Life" although I've used Weight Watchers in the past with some success. For me it was the accountability that mattered and kept me on track. Sort of like this forum, I cared what the mostly anonymous WW members would see at each meeting so I stayed on track enough to lose 30lbs. To me, WW is expensive $10/week for a monthly pass in my area.
Good luck,
Mike

Weight Watchers teaches you to eat right and there are no "diets". Honestly, my daughter worked for one of these weight loss centers and they did hire experiences people. But, admittedly she said they were coached to sell things that people didn't need.
My vote would be "Weight Watchers".

Thanks... I'll see if there is a local WW as well :)
Anyone seen the "Fat Fighters" sketches on Little Britain ;)

Bruce is the ultimate food-nazi, at least that's what I've heard him called several times. I've known a few people that did this. They were all successful. But it is a tough, regimented program. Clients tend not to slip. His HQ is located here.

I LOVE those "Fat Fighters" sketches on Little Britain, they make me howl with laughter! So cruel!
I went Weight Watchers and lost weight before my wedding. It was a great incentive to have to be accountable every week and also the competition was addictive.
Good luck whatever route you decide to go..:)

Frank,
There is bound to be a WW meeting in your area, they have/had their Atlantic Head Office in Darthmouth and some really good leaders up there too.
I lost about 56 pounds with WW in the past, I did put it back on but I feel that WW has a sensible approach, the idea that there are no foods that have to avoided I found very good. I would, in fairness to you and your leader let him/her know that you have diabetes, especially if you are watching your carbs. Certainly WW in North America used to put a lot of thought into their plans and did watch Fiber.

Thanks all... helpful suggestions :top:
I have also lost weight in the past but put it back on... and then some :o I take insulin so I do need to watch carbs, plus fats and salt as I also have hypertension and dyslipidaemia. I feel trapped by a constant fatigue... when I exercised more I had less energy for work and I still need to pay the bills. If I weighed less it should be easier to exercise but its getting there is the problem.
I suspect that having the accountability of a group will help with motivation but does that really help in the long term or is it like AA and you stay with WW the rest of your life?
I just looked and there are at least 5 WW meetings in my area :)

Frank,
Generally your actual weight should only be known by you and your Leader and that's how it normally works. With your permission they will announce when you have had a good loss or earned an award, such as losing 5lbs. Being part of the group helps, much the way this forum does, in that everyone there has the same problem, weight, and so can relate to each other's struggles and can also then offer suggestions and support. Some WW operations offer men only classes, I have attended both men only and mixed classes. I actually found the mixed classes to be more fun than the men only ones, the gender mix did add a bit of levity to the whole thing. One word of warning, the women in the class may "mother" you, but it's fun.
I always had fun when about 10 weeks before Christmas they would have a "little black number" talk, where the women were asked to visualise losing 10lbs so as to fit into a little black number, I would ask if it was okay for me to visualise them fitting into it too! ;)
Best of luck, and do keep us informed. Do you mind me asking, where in Nova Scotia are you?

Thanks Dave. I'll look into both SFL and WW this week and see which suits me better. I'm not sure that SFL uses a group and the guy who started it is a bodybuilder who I don't think has ever had a spare pound of fat to deal with himself.
I live in Fall River which is fairly close to the Airport and work in Bedford which is at the top end of Halifax Harbour.
