Hi my name is Nancy. My son's name is Thomas. He was diagnosed September 24, 2003, 1 week before his 10th birthday. I am glad to have found this forum. We have learned a lot but we still have so many question. He has been using a pump since December 2003 and is doing pretty good.

Welcome Nancy! I'm sure the diagnosis must have been very upsetting for the whole family. I'm glad your son has a supportive and well informed family to help him through things. Most of us here have diabetes ourselves, many since they were quite young so I'm sure you'll find lots of advice and friendship here.

Hope to see you around often,
HeatherP

Welcome to the group Nancy :D I hope getting diagnosed before his birthday didn't ruin it for him! Glad to hear he's doing well though :D

Thanks Natalie

He was a little bummed when he thought his birthday would be ruined, but he actually got a little spoiled by everyone (even extended family)

Nancy,

I don't post much anymore(my own personal reasons) but, I wanted to tell you something.

My mother learned and learned and changed the whole families life style to fit my needs.......diet is good for all anyway. And what is wrong with a schedule? My point is, that by doing that for me as a child she gave me the chance to live a long VERY happy life inspite of the diabetes.

I really liked the part of your post that said you have more to learn.

Welcome to the forum.

Take care all,
Liz

Hi Nancy! Welcome to our club...! I'm sure you never wanted to join, but you're stuck with us now. I was diagnosed a few months before I turned 13, and it played havoc with my maturity and growth--I just never recovered enough in time to grow at all--missed the growth spurt and never caught up! I'm a tiny adult now, but besides being tiny, diabetes never hassled me at all. In fact, made me one determined, stubborn, self-controlled SOB, and now, approaching 40 years with it, still going strong. I credit my dear late mother for fostering my attitude of self-reliance and self-discipline which has enabled me to live all these years with diabetes--and live them well, I might add, healthy, strong, and most important, happily. It's a battle, and we fight it 24/7, and although it becomes routine, it never gets easy.

Thomas is lucky to have a family who is there for him. Let the boy grow up fast--that will help him be in charge of himself. But make sure he knows THE single most important thing--NEVER LIE TO YOURSELF. He may lie to you--about tests, foods, etc, that's natural at some point (I have 2 kids of my own, ages 14 & 21...)--but if he lies to himself about these things, he'll pay for it down the road.

Good luck, hope you enjoy us here on this board,
and Stay in the Light...

Thank you all for the warm welcome to the group and for all of your kind words and support!!!!

I have been wanting to talk to diabetics and parents with diabetic kids ever since Thomas was diagnosed and am so glad I finally found you all.

We had a support group in our area, through the JDF, that never really took off and when I was finally able to make a meeting it was canceled and never reschedualed.

Welcome to the Forums, Nancy (sorry it's belated :) ). So glad you found us; I hope you'll find this site to be as informative, helpful, and friendly as I do.

I give credit to all the moms of every Diabetic, especially those Dx'ed as children. If it weren't for my mother I wouldn't be as well controlled as I am today, nor as knowledgeable. And if it weren't for her I wouldn't own this disease, it would own me. So a big round of applause to you, mick and angie's mom as well as my own for being able to provide us with a solid base to build upon

Hmmm I also give credit to my mom for my being tiny lol....much more fun to blame her for that hehehe...
