Metformin question

Long story short, I found out I had diabetes and was put on Metformin. I stopped taking it and then months later I found out my diabetes was getting worse and was put on Type R and type N insulin. I take my insulin everyday and my numbers are still high. I never asked my doctor if i should take the pills still. She is out of town and I can wait to ask when she gets back. My question is should I still be taking these pills. I was never told to not take them. They are 500mg pills and I don't remember if I took them once or 2 times a day. Can anyone help. The pills are in a sample pack that I got from the doctor the last time i visited her and don't have the info on when I should take them. I will for sure ask her when she gets back, but my number are always in the mid 200's even when I wake up. Thanks for any info.

Since metformin helps your body better use insulin, it might help you be able to use less insulin or see better results with the insulin you are taking. I would suggest you check with your doctor to find out what dosage would be most effective for you.

Nobody will be able to answer this question 100% for you Chet. Not too many people are taking NPH and Regular anymore. I think it would be best to wait and talk to your doctor about what her plan was for your care. Ask her about Lantus and Humalog or Novalog or some of the other fast acting insulins you can take with meals.

I wouldn't change anything until you've talked with your doctor.

Like the others said, Chet, you really need to discuss this with your doctor. Going on and off meds is not a good idea.

I think since your numbers are high in the morning that your Liver is dumping glucose into your blood stream when you wake up. I've got the same problem. Metformin helps with that. You should take the dose your Dr. perscribed, but also watch your glucose levels closely since you are taking insulin too. You will probably be on insulin until your numbers fall into the normal range. This combo works faster at getting your numbers normal. I was on just metformin and it took 1 month for my early morning readings to drop.
