I read somewhere not too long ago that chocolate ice cream, more so dark chocolate ice cream isn't bad for diabetics? I've found one article on it but unfortunately they didn't reference their source. I know that dark chocolate isn't as bad but I've read ice cream labels and I know that ice cream is something I should avoid.
Has anyone else heard about this before? Is there any truth to this?
Here's the article I found. Lick Diabetes with Ice cream and Dark Chocolate. (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/33456/lick_diabetes_with_ice_cream_and_dark.html)

It's just as bad for diabetics as it is for everyone else, so ya, it's bad for us. ;)
That article is pure ****.
For all you ice cream lovers this is great news you can prevent developing diabetes just by eating ice cream. In particular, eating chocolate ice cream can do the trick to prevent diabetes. One way to prevent getting diabetes is to eat more dairy foods and ice cream is a dairy product. For every increase in dairy servings per day decreases your chance of developing diabetes. So, does ice cream count as a serving? Yes, indeed. But you better your chances and maintain your weight if you eat low fat ice cream. Any ice cream will work against diabetes but chocolate seems to work even better

Never heard something like this about ice cream... The article mentions that low-fat ice cream is even a better choice. Typically low-fat = more sugar in products like ice cream... I would take it with a grain of salt, unless someone else knows something...

I would forget this silliness Tashia. I wish it were true, but ice cream is ice cream despite the flavor. Dark Chocolate has less sugar than most chocolate, but ice cream will have carbs from milk, added sugar and chocolate.
If it sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true. Why is that always true???

That's what I was thinking myself. Anything "fat free" seems to have a ridiculous amount of added sugar in it.

Right, basically, dark chocolate just has less added sugar than milk chocolate which is why it doesn't affect your blood glucose as much. You can go to the store and buy 85% dark chocolate that only has like 13 carbs for a 2 oz bar. Ice cream has carbs from milk and added sugar no matter what flavor it is.

half and half which i use to make ice cream (only made it twice since diagnosed in may) i used splenda...the half and half has 8 carbs per 1/2 cup...the unsweetened cocoa which i have used for chocolate ice cream in the past has 3 carb per 1 TBS and 1 fiber...not too bad for an special treat....i was pleased it turned out so good....homemade has a nice fresh taste in my opinion! i am going to try a peppermint ice cream which was a favorite i used to make....

Ice cream to prevent diabetes? I don't think so!
That wasn't printed on April Fools Day was it?
Sounds to me like someone took a study, read it sideways, twisted the good bits around, and made stuff up just so they could write an interesting article. In the mean time anyone reading that could be damaging their health if they believe it!
Anything in small amounts is ok when your blood sugar isn't already high... but we're all better off avoiding stuff like that most of the time.
Dark chocolate is good if you can get a good one (A real one as opposed to one that just tastes dark). A couple of squares after a meal can help to ward off the need for sweet stuff, and dark choc has a much lower GI so isn't as bad for our BGs :)
Ice cream also has a lower GI than a lot of 'treat' foods - anything high fat is slower to digest so a little easier on the BGs.
So they digest slower, they cause less damage - that does NOT mean they're actually good for us!

Oh susan, it sound so good, but the fat in half and half is too much for me to eat! It is bad enough I use a couple of teaspoons in my coffee. I can't imagine eating a bowl of this. There are 40 calories in 2 teaspoons of half and half.

My Lantus has been raised several times; now it's 25 units in the morning and 25 at night. Plus Metformin 1000mg 2/day. Is my dosage of Lantus high? Anyway, my sugar will NOT come down! It's usually hovering around 180 or so, and in the mid-200's a couple of hours after I eat. I AM being careful -- what am I doing wrong? Is there ANYTHING that's safe for me to eat? I tried the Glucerna cereal and it raised my sugar, so even that's out. I'm just about living on frozen veggies (broccoli, carrots and cauliflower) and I'm SO TIRED of them. Only meat I really like is chicken or a good old-fashioned hamburger WITHOUT the bread/roll. Oh, I also eat fish often. Is anyone on a higher dosage of Lantus than I am? I have no idea what the average dose of that is. ****, I feel down.
Oh, Jan B. -- where have you been? I haven't heard from you; I hope everything's okay.

Since my sugar is often in the 200's, does that mean I'll die soon? I'm scared!

Sheralyn, you're not going to die soon. However, it does sound like you need to make an appointment with your doctor to talk about your medication and insulin and see what he/she can suggest as far as changes go. Are you exercising? Even a 15-minute walk can really help. I'm not on insulin, but from what I've read here, when things start to go haywire with your control, it's time to make some changes somewhere, and hopefully, your doctor can help you do this.
You're doing healthy things for yourself and that's great. Makes it a lot easier on you and your doc. I know it's tough, but do try to stay positive. You're going to be OK.

Sheralyn, sounds like you exactly where I was a while back. I was up to 26 units of Lantus and 1000 mg of actosplusmet. It seemed like my numbers would never come down and then one day, they were really low. I am no longer on insulin. And I just took myself off of my metformin because I am taking byetta which is holding me after my meals. Sounds to me like you are eating right. The only thing I could think of could be your portion size all wrong. I was scared like u too, I thought I was gonna die young. Soon you will figure it all out and you will think back and wonder why you were so scared. You will be ok. Plus, your in good hands here at the forum. These people know their stuff.

Here's the article I found. Lick Diabetes with Ice cream and Dark Chocolate. (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/33456/lick_diabetes_with_ice_cream_and_dark.html) Low carb ice cream is good and it will not effect your blood sugar like regular ice cream can. Now for chocolate if you get chocolate that is at least 60% cocoa it has half the sugar that milk chocolate.:D

The Breyer's Carb Smart comes in chocolate and is tasty, and I think I'm going to whip up a milkshake in the blender with it, Hood CC "dairy beverage" and extra cocoa powder and have me a good ol' time! :D

While I use both of these, never occurred to me to to make a shake from them....sounds "delish!" Might want to use the chocolate Hood, then you wouldn't need the cocoa..though you can NEVER have too much chocolatey flavor!

They only had the regular flavor Hood at the store, no chocolate. Blah on them.
If you decide to do this, mix your cocoa with about a teaspoon or two of water in a small container--makes it blend MUCH better.

Never seen the Hood brand ice cream. We drink their "milk" product, but usually mix it with regular milk, or light soy. Will have to try the ice cream. :)
